Ten years ago, I met him at my TED dinner in February 2001. Months later, on a hot Sunday afternoon in August, he called me out of the blue at Eastover Farm, and said he remembered my mentioning that my older brother Philip, a NASA physicist, had prostate cancer. He talked to me for over an hour, and suggested Philip go to see top specialist, a Dr. Patrick Walsh in Baltimore, which he could help facilitate. It was an act of kindness that quite amazing to me. However, my brother's brilliance as a physicist comes with the expense of all kinds of phobias, one of which is a fear of travel. He would not budge from Raleigh-Durham, where he now lives.
