No. The Apple TV (3'd generation- latest and greatest) does work but requires internet access.
You have intemet access on board your aircraft through the Aircell system when you are above 10,000
feet over the continental USA.
Since you do not have internet access when on the ground, we tested the system using Larry's phone set
up as a hot spot and played a movie that was stored on his i-Pad.
The reason that you need to have internet access is because the movie studios have been trying to
combat aftermarket bootleg piracy on DVD's (china) and other forms of distribution (internet) so they
have gone directly to the manufacturers of equipment that play their content or distribute their content
electronically with tools such as Image restraint tokens" or in this case, with Apple TV blocking movies
from playing unless they can verify that it is an authentic licensed movie.
Since Larry / you are looking to play a movie that you have stored on an i-Pad while either on the ground
or perhaps in St. Thomas where your aircraft does not have internet coverage, we suggested to Larry
that he purchase a "jailbreak" Apple TV 2 on ebay (and I believe he ordered one late this afternoon?).
These computer geeks hack the Apple 2 iOS software (they have not figured out how to hack the 3'd
generation yet) and go into the coding to essentially disarm the requirement to verify the movie contents
authenticity.
Based upon our verification with Larry today, you should be able to watch a movie that is on your i-Pad
once you are above 10,000 feet all the way through Florida.
