Before the second world war, when our country was still independent, the Jewish community in Lithuania was a part of our country, they were citizens and residents of equal rights and the government was favorable to them. Unfortunately, after the occupation by Soviet Union and later invasion of Germany, the conditions to Jewish people became horrifying. But once again, it is not Lithuania that was destroying Jewish community and you should know that some Lithuanians even risked their own lives to save Jews. We were not an independent country anymore and it was not the Lithuanian government that was leading our country. Besides, Jews and Lithuanians have even something in common- Jews had genocide, while Lithuanians had massive deportations and tens of thousands of Lithuanian families were exiled to Siberia and other part of Soviet Union far in North. My grandmother had a best friend, who was Jewish and who was about to get killed by Nazi when she was still a little girl and has an amazing story of how she survived.
