CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTS: SPRING 2016
Assignment 10:
Reception Desk Continued,
(1) Isometric view of reception desk front
(1) Isometric view of reception desk back
scale NTS
Step 1: 3d model
You will be using Rhino to create a 3d model of your reception desk. Set the units in Rhino to inches. Model
your reception desk to an appropriate level of detail for this exercise.
Step 2: Isometric View
Once you have your desk modeled, in the perspective view mode type the command ISOMETRIC to create
an accurate isometric view of your reception desk. It will prompt you what side you want to take the view
from (ie NW, NE, SW, SE). Pick the view that best shows the front side and back side of your reception desk.
Step 3: Making 2d linework
Highlight all components of your reception desk (you can type SELALL to select everything). Type the
command MAKE2D to begin the process of making a 2d drawing from your 3d model. Rhino will prompt
you to select settings for the different types of lines it will output. Play with these until you like the results.
Hit enter to complete the command. Switch to the TOP view mode to see your 2d linework. At this point I
like to scale the 2d linework to some measured vertical dimension. Although these drawings will technically
be NTS (not to scale) it is useful to get it at least approximately close to true scale for when you bring it into
AutoCAD.
Step 4: Exporting from Rhino / Importing to Autocad
Select all of the linework you intend to export from Rhino. Use the EXPORT WITH ORIGIN command
(found in the File drop-down menu). Rhino will prompt you to pick an origin point. Select DWG, 2004
closed Polylines as the export type. This creates an Autocad file our of your selected rhino linework.
Open up Autocad. Open up the file you just created. Open up your existing model space drawing containing
your reception desk details. Copy over the isometric linework (I like to use the command COPY WITH
BASEPOINT, CTRL+SHIFT+C) and paste it over into your reception desk file.
Step 5: Layer management
Change the layers to make your drawing look graphically correct
Step 6: Place on sheet
Annotate and incorporate your two isometric drawings onto a sheet (this can be on an pre-existing sheet with
other reception desk details).
Due Tuesday 4/5
• Post your sheet(s) containing your isometric drawings to Canvas before class.
• Bring a printed copy scaled to 11x17 (for clarification, this is your 24x36 sheet, just printed to scale to
11x17, you don't have to re-format in CAD)
