I want to provide you with the outcome of my discussions with Columbia University regarding the balance of the gift you gave me in 2012. As you recall, my proposal to Columbia University was that unspent funds be transferred to the Stony Brook University School of Dental Medicine to support my work there (after leaving Columbia at the end of June I will be a member of the part-time faculty at that dental school). After much discussion about the validity of this request, they have refused to release the funds (which should be about $35K), claiming that the gift was given to the University. My argument that the gift was given to support my work, and therefore should be transferred when I leave, was rejected. Any further discussion up the chain will get me nowhere. I believe they will allow me to designate how the funds will be spent after I leave, and my plan is to provide scholarships for dental students who are simultaneously pursuing the dental degree as well as a public health degree. These kids need financial support. The support you provided was used judiciously, and helped be more productive over the past few years...much appreciated. Regards, Ira Ira B.
