From: Jes Staley Subject: Day 10 Date: Mon, 11 Nov 2013 01:00:30 +0000 Our position is N 17.14 and W 57.56. Winds are around 20 knots with a rolling sea. We have the full main up together with the jib and the staysail. Our speed is 9.5 knots, but as the wind is coming straight from the east, and we can't go straight down wind, we have to zig-zag to Antigua. We are a day and change away. Last night we passed two other boats. There is a new tracking system used around the world called AIS, whereby you can see on radar and the chart plotter any vessel within 20 miles or so. We passed a freighter going to Santos in Brasil, and another sailboat, called Leopard. Leopard is one of the faster yachts on the water and she passed us on her way to Antigua. We spent sometime on the VHF with her. We had a leak on the cooling system on the lower genset this morning, so we spent a time fixing the leak. The leak came back this afternoon, so we switched to the second generator. It is nice having air conditioning if your sailing in the tropics. I reread parts of "Bonfire of the Vanities". it is worth while to compare Tom Wolfe's description of New York City's backlash to the 80's with where we are now. With a little luck, Bequia will soon be one more vessel to cross the Atlantic to the new world.
