Emergencies don't wait for convenient times, and when someone calls, we make sure to answer. The caller was an anxious, middle-aged man who explained that the electricity in his home had been shut off. He was wondering if we could help him have the electricity turned back on before nightfall. The person who usually helps us resolve issues with O&R was out of town and there was no time to start making calls. So, after confirming the man's desperate situation, I immediately wrote a check for the amount owed and told the man that he could come pick it up. The man expressed his relief and gratitude and soon showed up on my driveway. He arrived in bekovodige clothes, all ready for yom tov. I was taken by the air of royalty about him, and thought wryly of the mistaken image that many have of paupers, envisioning them as people who sit in tattered clothes on park benches. The painful truth is that the person who picked up the check that afternoon may very well be the one who sits next to you in shul. As he took the check from my hand, the man related that he had been out of work for a year but was finally starting a EFTA00637945 new job right after yom toy. Of course, the help we provide is never contingent on a pledge of future support, but many of our supporters are indeed individuals who reached out to Tomche Shabbos during their darkest hour and are eager to give back as soon as things take a turn for the better. While we continue working hard to assist those who reach out to us on a daily basis, we are also constantly looking for ways to be proactive in providing support. I am especially proud of the arba minim sale that Tomche Shabbos held this year for the first time. This idea was suggested about a year ago, and during the summer we reached out to the largest U.S. importer of arba minim. We were able to arrange for a great deal on the sets, which we then sold at cost price. Another exciting development is our upcoming coat distribution, which will be held this Sunday. We are expecting a delivery of hundreds of brand new children's coats in all sizes, and these coats will then be offered to the neediest in our community. Finally, we recently launched the Monsey Torah Fund, which we hope will provide much-needed support to rebbeim and kollel families. As our community experiences phenomenal growth, we at Tomche Shabbos work tirelessly to meet new challenges with creativity, foresight, and innovation. Thank you for being a partner in our work!
