moot hi: to broadcast, here is an excerpt from the rehearsals. (Photo: BR. Sebastian

Three composers, three distinct musical languages: that's on offer on this
programme with conductor Mariss Jansons and clarinettist Andreas
Ottensamer. Thus in Jean Sibelius's First Symphony, his characteristic
Nordic idiom is already unmistakeable. Weber's first Clarinet Concerto, in
turn, combines stupendous virtuosity and Romantic cantilena. And finally
Bela Bartok with The Miraculous Mandarin: a rare fusion of uncompromising
modernity and sensuousness of sound.

Pafos Castle (Photo: liens)
This year's European Concert takes the Berliner Philharmoniker to Cyprus,
more precisely: to the ancient port city of Pafos. Before the city's Byzantine
castle, the orchestra plays works by Cad Maria von Weber and Antonin
Dvorak which impress with their lyrical zest and warm colours. The
conductor is Mariss Jansons, a close friend of the orchestra for several
decades, and the soloist in Weber's Clarinet Concerto No. 1 is Andreas
Ottensamer.

NEW IN THE ARCHIV: SIMON RATTLE CONDUCTS »TOSCA« AT THE
BERLIN PHILHARMONIE

Like no other work in the history of music theatre, Giacomo Puccini's Tosca
gives expression in the most concentrated and gripping way the eternal
operatic themes of love, jealousy, politics, violence and beauty. A concert
performance of the opera has now been given at the Philharmonie with the
acclaimed Latvian soprano Kristine Opolais in the title role, as already in the
recent staged production at the Easter Festival in Baden-Baden. Under the
direction of chief conductor Sir Simon Rattle, the Berliner Philharmoniker
performed the iridescent music which explores the contrasts between
lyricism and dramatic tension to maximum effect: "Rattle gives a penetrating
reading of the score that is bath highly sophisticated and profound. He
allows the Philharmaniker to show off magnificently" (Berliner Morgenpost)
