Hello Insiders,
When the writer Sadie Stein published a piece last week about buttered breakfast
rolls in The Times, she didn't foresee the bread-and-butter backlash it would
ignite. Her essay engendered reactions all across the internet — especially on
Twitter, where some users were furious.
Sure, plenty of readers had fond memories of the buttered rolls I described, but
others were angry: They felt condescended to and insulted. How dare I claim the
buttered roll for New York, like some sort of cosmopolitan conquistador? I was
called an elitist, a bubble-dweller who (apparently) spent my days snickering at
rubes in flyover country.
At Times Insider this week, we explore how it feels when online anger is directed
at you. Take a read.

Foodies: For you, we have a tour of Julia Child's former Georgetown home —
yellow and leaning like the Tower of Pisa. "Man, was it ugly," writes our journalist.
Politics junkies: For you, we have a tour of Sarah Huckabee Sanders' former
White House office. She's soon to move into Sean Spicer's old digs, where she'll
gain a fireplace.
Until next week,
Francesca Donner
