Doesn't make sense to me. When I googled what a change of level is with an I-20 it seemed to be if you are
changing levels within a field of study, eg: from a masters to a Phd

Hi James
Can you please clarify what a 'change of level' is. You say when you do a change of level you have to take the
next available start date which is the January start date. If it is mandatory with the change of level to do the
January start date why would the application be necessary in any case as my current I-20 is already for the
January start date. I am currently at home in South Africa, please get back to me as soon as you are able. I am
also available on
Thank you and regards

I just found out that you have switched to February instead of January. Please note that we will have to cancel
your I 20 and Change of Level. This means that you will have to get a new initial 120, Pay a new SEVIS Fee
and submit a new 120 application. When you do a change of level you have to take the next available start
date which is the January start date. Please confirm you have received this email. Thanks.
All the best,
James West
