You described very well a difference between math and biology and how algorithms and deception are playing role. I think that problem with biology is that it is super complex. We are dealing with numerous factors both from host and from the pathogen (and from the system level) - while our understanding about even basic facts it totally missing. On the top of that complexity we are dealing with numerous stochastic processes (chance) and exceptions. Not easy (although not impossible) to decipher.
