From: Dan Dubno < To: "Epstein Jeffrey ([email protected])" <[email protected]> Subject: RE: Hourglass Initiative: Call To Action Date: Mon, 28 Jun 2010 18:51:21 +0000 Inline-Images: image001.jpg Dear Friends! The Hourglass Initiative, a non-profit effort that encourages scientists to defeat the spread of Weapons of Mass Destruction, has moved forward considerably in the past few weeks. Now that our foundation is incorporated and all of the myriad of documents have been filed with various government entities, we have detailed our goals, objectives, plans, and organizational governance, etc. More significantly, our efforts to develop tools to allow scientists to safely and anonymously report on threats are gathering momentum. We are engaged in technological and organizational partnerships to design, promote, and disseminate critical technologies promoting secure scientific reporting on WMD threats. In addition, we are planning an educational summit to be held in the late Fall of 2010 to focus attention on the need for scientific ethics education. To engage scientists in the critical effort to prevent the further spread of devastating technology, a much needed seismic educational shift is urgently required. We will continue developing strategies for bringing such curriculum and programs to institutions of higher education. Our approach is to collaborate with other scientific organizations, educational institutions, government, and academic groups to achieve the ambitious goal of seeing scientists embrace ethical codes of conduct. I wanted to update you on our encouraging progress. Most of you have seen our website, but if not, please visit http://www.hourglassinitiative.com As we explore a variety of technologies to provide scientists (and human rights advocates and others) with secure methods to avoid censorship, we need your wisdom and help. If you know of others with whom we should partner, please let us know. We are eager for your suggestions of others developing similar technologies that will allow scientists to safely communicate through encrypted web-based means. In addition to projects such as the TOR PROJECT (http://www.torproject.org/) and WIKILEAKS (http://www.wikileaks.org ), below I list a few other interesting efforts that may help us accomplish such goals: I) Reporters Sans Frontilres - Reporters Without Borders unveils first-ever "Anti-Censorship Shelter" EFTA00745222 http://en.rsforg/reporters-without-borders-unveils-25-06-20 I0,37809.html 2) Android App Aims to Allow Wiretap-Proof Cell Phone Calls « The Firewall - Forbes.com http://blogs.forbes.com/firewal1/2010/05/25/android-app-aims-to-allow-wiretap-proof-cell-phone-calls/ 3) Twitter working to thwart censorship - International Business Times - http://www.ibtimes.com/articles/20100 I27/twitter-working-thwart-censorshi htm 4) Browse Anonymously on Your Android Phone With Tor http://ostatic.com/blog/browse-anonymously-on-y • ur-android-phone-withor 5) OpenNet Initiative - identify and document Internet filtering and surveillance http://opennet.net/ 6) Mobile encryption technology: http://sigillu.com/index.html and Cell Crypt: http://www.cellcrypt.corn/freebrieffigclid=CIL_PmanZ4CFR9N5Qod7WdBqQ Please share your thoughts of other endeavors and allies we need to collaborate with!
