Hi JEE...
I'm off to UK/France/Germany as of early, early tomorrow morning (back
on 18 June), and
thought I would check in... Here's where things stand:
1. I got the written offer from Stanford. It was actually pretty good,
all things
considered, but not quite good enough. I decided that I
wasn't going to take it seriously
unless several conditions were met,
which they are working on meeting. Some of these will
cost them a fair
amount, and they are still in the middle of a financial crisis (worse
than Harvard's). So, we'll see. (But, if I had to bet, I would bet
that they will come
through.)
2. Mike Smith has not responded directly to my request. He has told
others that the
Stanford deal is a "great opportunity," and that he
doesn't want to stand in my way. My gut
is that he will not come
through in time. Steve Hyman has told me to come see him, and I
suspect that he would concoct some kind of "Vice Provost" thing to
keep me around -- but
I'm looking for a bit more independence and
ability to get things done.
So, bottom line: I think I'll be looking seriously at real estate in
Palo Alto. You know
anybody who wants to buy a Victorian house in
Cambridge?
I hope you are doing OK.
