I just found out that he passed away recently, which is a terrible shock to me. I have known him very well for years, as Francis Crick and Max and Manny Delbruck introduced me to him back in the early 80s, and we became close friends. He, Sydney Brenner, Francis Crick, and others once surprised me with a very nice surprise dinner in my honor in San Diego a few years back. He was a great guy, very interesting to discuss origins of life with (one of my personal interests).
