From: John Brockman < INIMI> To: Jeffrey Epstein <[email protected]> Subject: EDGE University, again? Date: Mon, 14 Dec 2009 18:37:00 +0000 JE, See the email below from Marc Hauser. As you will recall when we met, he had assigned EDGE for the Harvard Freshmen taking his science introductory course, which they discussed at a weekly seminar with a TA. Now he wants to go deeper, and teach a new course based on the ideas presented on EDGE which would be interdisciplinary and also inter-institutional. It would be a Harvard course, but it would be open (online) to students at other selected universities and in this regard he sees a role for my friends at Google, Facebook, Twitter, etc. It's a great idea. I'm thinking of doing it as a business. If I can get Evan williams, Dick, and Sergey & Larry onboard, we would would do to Universities what's happening to newspapers. Sean Parker is ready to help. What do you think? See Hauser's email below. Best, JB = From: marc hauser Date: December 9, To: John Brockman Subject: Re: Arts Hi John <[email protected]> 2009 10:40:08 AM EST & Letters Daily i would love to do a course here at Harvard called something like "Radical Ideas to Transform the World", use Edge discussions as the platform. it would have to be a seminar, and i would have to get kids from all areas. But I am game to do it, and if we can get the google, facebook, etc. folks behind it, very cool. on your worry about aging EDGE-ies, well yes. but old does not mean less productive or interesting! max is recruiting for his new book, and as he noted to me when here, a large number are my students! so there is a generation out there, and they are maturing nicely. one of my worries, is what i call the "fear of the radical." i worry that the next generation may not "just do it" in nike fashion, but because of concerns over job security, publishing a million trivial papers, and so on, may be less likely to push the envelope. we need environments that support the cliched out of the box thinking. in any case, a seminar with radical edge ideas coudl fuel such a movement.
