Thanks to your help, we've massively benefited the country. From: Kaisth, Daniela [mailto Sent: Sunday, May 02, 10 13.49 To: Dr. Henry Jarecki; A Goodman Cc: Miller, Jim; Diana Villabon Subject: FW: Bios of IIE's SRF Iraqi Grantees Dear Henry and Allan: Jim did a terrific job of arranging our visit to Boston last week. Highpoints were meetings with the Harvard Humanitarian Institute (HHI) and Dr. Kareem's lecture to students at the Harvard School of Public Health. We also met with Jackie Bhabha of the Harvard Human Rights Committee and paid visits to the Harvard Middle East Center, Suffolk University, and the Massachusetts College of Art and Design. We gathered several scholars located in Boston for lunch (please see photo attached). They were from Sudan (Harvard); Myanmar (Tufts); Kyrgyztan (MIT, then Harvard in Fall); Congo (Felix Kaputu - now an alum and at the Mass College of Art and Design); and Iraq (Dr. Kareem). Of course, the major impetus for the trip was to help Dr. Kareem. Turns out that HHI is very interested in his qualifications, as they want to do work in Iraq and need talent with local knowledge and access to fieldwork. Hopefully they will soon give him a $5,000 seed grant to do some research, which may lead to other projects. Thanks to Henry, we will soon bring Dr. Kareem to lecture at Yale as well. Looking at the bios of all 206 Iraqi scholars to date, attached (please note that the doc is 45 pages long) , one of the HHI directors commented that "SRF has a whole university of Iraqi scholars." I am very mindful of the fact that, soon, all 200+ scholars will, like Dr. Kareem, be off of our grant and struggling to find their way. I know that we cannot do everything to help everyone, but I wonder if there is a way for our program to better connect Iraqi alumni with the groups that will need them to help re-build their country -- both inside and outside of Iraq. EFTA00768132 Many thank again to Jim and his terrific team for arranging the trip. It was a real pleasure to see him in action persuading universities to take our scholars. As always, I feel very fortunate to be part of this team. Thank you, Henry and Allan, for making this great work possible. - Daniela From: Miller, Jim Sent: Wednesday, April 21, 2010 2:50 PM To: Cc: Bergart, Andrea; Kaisth, Daniela; Al-Soze, Nada Subject: Bios of IIE's SRF Iraqi Grantees Dear Margeaux, From Daniela, I learned that HI-II is interested in having more information about the Iraqi scholars who are part of the SRF fellowship and training program in order to assess if there are other individuals, in addition to Dr. Kareem, who might fit with an HHI Iraq project(s). I have attached the short bios of all of our grantees. Many are in hard science disciplines-- such as engineering-- but there are some (like Iraq #219) who I feel would be of interest. I am not copying Mike or others in your group because the file is large and I don't want to clog email boxes of those where the information is not relevant.
