How cilia talk
Primary (non-motile) cilia use membrane proteins in their role as a
coordinator of the cell's signaling pathways. New findings show how a cilium
retains those membrane proteins - a barrier at its base made up of proteins
called septins.
2
To stent or not?
A large randomized trial demonstrates that stenting and surgical clearing of
arteries are safe and equally effective ways of treating the narrowing of the
carotid arteries, called stenosis.
3
Diabetes dilemmas
This clinical trial demonstrates that two popular high blood pressure drugs
had no effect on progressive kidney damage, but did slow degeneration of the
retina - two complications of Type 1 diabetes.
4
One path to obesity
The authors report a novel mechanism by which a high-fat diet can alter the
expression of a large number of obesity-associated genes, suggesting new
approaches to treating obesity and insulin resistance.
5
Coat structures
Crystallographic analyses of subunits of the COPI coat - a critical structure
for the transport of protein-filled vesicles from the Golgi back to the
endoplasmic reticulum - reveal similarities to two other major vesicle coats in
the cell, suggesting a common origin for this type of structural protein.
6
Sensing tension
This study demonstrates a molecular mechanism for how adherens junctions
- protein complexes that occur at cell-cell junctions in epithelial tissues -
sense and respond to mechanical forces in the cell.
7
Monitoring patients
Monitoring patients after surgery using pulse oximetry, which measures the
oxygenation of arterial blood, can improve patient outcomes and lower
overall health-care costs by reducing the number of emergency resuscitations
and trips to the intensive care unit.
