From: "HDtracks Press" To: "jeevacation®gmail.com" <jeevacation®gmail.com> Subject: HDtracks Newsletter for 11.18.10 Date: Thu, 18 Nov 2010 23:22:28 +0000 HDtracks Newsletter for 11.18.10 Ray Charles, now on HDTracks.com in stunning 96kHz/24bit High Def. It's True. Genius Loves Company For the first time ever, Ray Charles' eight-time Grammy®-winning masterpiece Genius Loves Company is available in High Definition, and it's only available on HDTracks.com! "The thrill of being in Ray's life is one of music's greatest adventures. I'm so glad it has a new life. He is an American treasure and was on his game till the last note." -Phil Ramone, producer, Genius Loves Company Featured Album Winner of the 2004 Grammy® Awards for: • Record of the Year • Album of the Year • Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist(s) • Best Gospel Performance • Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals • Best Pop Vocal Album • Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical • Best Surround Sound Album Genius Loves CompanyjNEW 96kHzJ24bit) Ray Charles Genius Loves Company stands as a remarkable hallmark in a legendary career. A twelve-time Grammy® Award-winner and an original inductee to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Ray Charles, who has appeared on more than 250 recordings, is a true titan of 20th century music. On the multiple Grammy®-winning Genius Loves Company, Ray sings a dozen duets with a dazzling array of guest artists from virtually every genre, who have won a combined 79 Grammy® Awards, including Elton John, Van Morrison, Gladys Knight, B.B. King, Diana Krall, Willie Nelson, James Taylor, Natalie Cole, Bonnie Rait, and more. In addition to the EFTA00779917 extraordinary music, the album is an audiophile's dream. The first ever recipient of the Best Surround Sound Album category, the record features production credits by some of the industry's greatest (John Burk, Teny Howard, Phil Ramone, and Ed Thacker to name a few) and truly astonishing sonic engineering by Al Schmitt, Robert Hadley, Doug Sax, and more. Presented here in 96kHz/24bit, this already spectacular album takes on an entirely new level of clarity and nuance. New 96kHz/24bit titles from CSO Resound and Velut Luna ;ti STRAUSS: Ein Heldenleben / WEBERN: Im Sommerwind (NEW 96kHz/24bit) Chicago Symphony Orchestra I Bernard Haitink CSO Resound "Haitink worked his customary miracles on behalf of Richard Strauss and the CSO gave him what it always gives him: superb and deeply felt playing." —Chicago Tribune This album from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, considered one of the world's greatest Strauss ensembles, features Ein Heldenleben (A Hero's Life) whose US premiere it gave in 1900. On this fantastic live recording, Principal Conductor Bernard Haitink leads with restraint and allows the strings and woodwinds to sing. In the famous Battle Scene, the brass and percussion roar, while concertmaster Robert Chen plays his violin solos depicting Strauss's wife with tender beauty. Webern's early tone poem fin Sommenvind, also included on the recording, is indebted to Strauss's rhapsodic romanticism, overflowing with spacious melodies. Rt, spin (NEW 96kHz/24bit) Leonora Armellini Velut Luna At only 16 years of age, Italian piano prodigy Leonora Armellini has accomplished more than most musicians accomplish in a lifetime. She's the recipient of multiple international performance prizes, including the prestigious Venice Prize, the Adriano Lincetto Prize, and the Pentagram Award. On this Velut Luna release, Armellini takes on the virtuosic work of Fryderyk Chopin—some of the most beautiful (and difficult) music in the Romantic piano music repertoire. Pristine recording quality, magnificent performances, and of course Chopin's unparalleled keyboard writing make for a true gem of an album. New 96kHz/24bit titles from Cheskt• and Son lines EFTA00779918 La Voz (NEW 96kHz/24bit) Xiomara Laugart Chesky The amazing Cuban singer recorded with Chesky's minimal micing. "We should call Xiomara Laugart simply 'La Voz'-the Voice. She is one of the few singers not just in Cuban musk, but in any musk, to pull off an a capella performance with all the depth and nuance of a full band." -Herman Portocarero La Voz is a brilliant Latin Jazz album from the amazing Grammy-nominated Cuban vocalist Xiomara Laugart. Backed by a spectacularly tight band of piano, two basses, percussion, Turkish Autoharp, and saxophone, Xiomara's silky, sultry vocals are infused with the sounds of old Cuba. Her voice winds wonderfully around syncopated saxophone lines, and slippery upright bass, moving between an almost conversational vocal delivery and ultra-melodic, seductive singing ("Anorado Encuentro" is particularly awe- inspiring). A wonderfully emotive record, captured in pristine 96kHz/24bit, La Voz is a must-have for fans of smooth vocal jazz, impeccable musicianship, and masterful Cuban rhythms. Circles and Calligrams (NEW 96kHz/24bit) Benoit Delbecq Songlines "Plenty of forward-thinking jazz pianists have been painted with a modern-classical brush, but few have approached improvisation armed with the manual vocabularies demanded by Cage, Ligeti and the like with the same diligence and flair as Parisian keyboardist Delbecq."—Time Out New York Delbecq's second solo piano record on Songlines showcases his brilliance at its most concentrated and is an essential companion to his trio releases. Delbecq's style extends the resources of the piano with an array of preparations that he works seamlessly into his playing, improvising interlocking vamps and lines that make it sound like more than one instrument. His melodic- harmonic constructions demonstrate a very individual combination of tonality and dissonance that will certainly appeal to fans of modem jazz and contemporary classical. u. Other Grammy® Album of the Year winners Raising Sand (96kHz/24bit) Alison Krauss I Robert Plant The winner of five Grammy® awards, including 2008 Album of the Year, Raising Sand marked a ground-breaking, inter- generational collaboration between rock icon Robert Plant and acclaimed bluegrass/country singer and fiddler Alison Krauss. In addition to producing and performing, T Bone Burnett handpicked each of the album's covers, including songs by The Everly Brothers, Sam Phillips, and Gene Clark. A gorgeous and heartfelt country-twinged performance, Raising Sand breathes new life into these classic songs and shows all parties involved at an artistic pinnacle. 2008 Album of the Year c ti River: The Joni Letters (96kHz/24bit) Herbie Hancock On River: The Joni Letters, the legendary pianist, innovator, and twelve-time Grammy® winner Herbie Hancock explores the words and music of another musical pioneer, Joni Mitchell. River: The Joni Letters won Album of the Year and Best Contemporary Jazz Album at the 2008 Grammy® Awards. It was the first jazz album to win Album of the Year in 43 years. The album features duets with Norah Jones, Tina Turner, Corinne Bailey Rae, Luciana Souza, Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell herself. 2007 Album of the Year One of the all-time great jazz albums, Getz/Gilberto won Album of the Year, Best Jazz Instrumental and Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical at the 1965 Grammy® Awards. The single "The Girl from Ipanema" (featuring vocals from Joao's ex-wife Astrud) also won for Best Record of the Year. Released in 1964, Getz/Gilberto brought together American saxophonist Stan Getz and Brazilian guitarist JoAo Gilberto, and also features Antonio Carlos Jobim on piano. The album spent 96 weeks on the charts and remains one of the best selling jazz albums of all time. Getz/Gilberto (96kHz/24bit) 1964 Album of the Year Stan Getz I Jo5o Gilberto EFTA00779920 Rock Mud Eszter Balint "Balint has succeeded in recording the young year's most quirky and compelling album."— Billboard "A chronological set of live in-studio musical snapshots, THE BBC SESSIONS illustrates this Scottish septet's organic and determined rise to soft-spoken fame."—Billboard Eszter Balint's Bar None debut Mud falls partway between city and country, with Eszter's cool-as- concrete vocals in striking contrast to an austere roots-rock sound redolent of dank swamps and remote juke joints. Part blues-y singer-songwriter, part raunchy rock, this is a supremely enjoyable album. It's artful and mysterious and it draws you in like a whispered conversation from across a dimly lit bar. Call it Americana-gone-bad; if Gillian Welch were backed by, say, Arto Lindsay, it might sound something like this. The BBC Sessions Belle And Sebastian Easily one of the most important bands of the last two decades, Belle And Sebastian remain an ever- present influence on modem rock. While other rock groups of the decade delivered music drenched with angst and distortion, the Scottish duo recorded quiet, impossibly tuneful numbers indebted to 1960s pop and folk. Issued in 2008, this collection presents a fine set of live-in the studio BBC radio sessions by the group. The album stands up among the group's best studio work and is a fantastic introduction to their sleepy brand of dream-pop. Country and Bluegrass intry Music (96kHz/24bit) Willie Nelson Breakdown Old & In The Way EFTA00779921 "A welcome and spirited return to Nelson's first love of classic country."—The Boston Globe With Country Music, Willie Nelson goes back to his roots with a songbook of classic Americana. Recorded in Nashville, TN and produced by the legendary T Bone Burnett (who also co-arranged three songs), the album includes a Nelson original, "Man With The Blues," as well as fresh takes on a number of classic folk and country songs including Ernest Tubb's "Seaman's Blues" and The Delmore Brothers' "Freight Train Boogie." Country Music features a number of stellar collaborators, including old-time banjo master Riley Baugus, double bassist Dennis Crouch, and T Bone himself, all musicians featured on the Grammy- winning Raising Sand by Robert Plant and Alison Krauss. In the 1970's, the bluegrass super group Old & In The Way introduced bluegrass to a new and wider audience. Led by The Grateful Dead's Jerry Garcia and mandolin virtuoso David Grisman, the band brought new life and flavor to the genre with their mix of originals, traditional bluegrass songs, and covers of bands like The Rolling Stones. The live album Breakdown, released in 1973, was the band's third release and features astonishing instrumental prowess and vocal harmonies on bluegrass classics like "Panama Red" and "Muleskinner Blues" and the Garcia- penned originals "Old & In The Way Breakdown" and "Jerry's Breakdown." Hidden Treasures A new section of our newsletter devoted to interesting music off the beaten path from the depths of the HDtracks collection. Coward Nels Cline "...an instrumental masterpiece, further positioning Cline as one of today's most open- minded composers, players and musical conceptualists." - John Kelman, Downbeat Nels Cline is the lead guitarist for the hugely successful, Grammy®-winning rock group Wilco and one of the seminal figures of avant jazz in the last 3 decades. Recently named a "Guitar God" by Rolling Stone, here Cline presents a brilliant solo CD that covers an extraordinarily broad range of musical styles, with a surprising acoustic sensibility. The provocative title belies the intensely personal nature of this album which demonstrates a daring musicianship and a Xenakis: Works for Piano Charles Peltz I Jane Peters I Society For New Music I Aki Takahashi This is the first time Xenakis' complete works for solo piano have been collected on a single disc. They are brilliant, virtuoso masterworks of the 20th century piano literature, whose characteristic traits can be described as "clouds," "sound masses," "nebulae" and galaxies - sounds that are highly expressive and compelling, marked by both the composer's heart and brain. Diabolically difficult to play, Xenakis himself considered the album's first song, Evryali, to be "...a kind of athletics for hands, body and brain". Its sheer virtuosity and the brilliantly full sound embraces the extreme registers of the keyboard. A fantastic EFTA00779922 willingness to take musical and emotional risks. Coward blends improvisation and composition with a huge and constantly changing emotional and timbral palette. Coward is a musical tour de force. introduction to one of the greatest composers of the 20th century. Englaborn Johann Johannsson "Music in theater has the capacity to reveal the sublime in the mundane, and the best thing about Englaborn, a consummate walkabout album, is its capacity to do the same thing in real life."—Brian Howe, Pitchfork (8 out of 10) On his debut solo album, Englaborn, Icelandic composer Johann Johannsson presents a gorgeous set of string-and-piano-led pieces that were created to complement a stage play of the same name. Sad and lovely, the chamber-music aesthetic that Johannsson has meticulously established is occasionally altered by the presence of heavily treated vocals (see "Odi Et Amo") or programmed beats ("Salfraeoingur"), resulting in an inventive and elegiac record. Asmodeus: Book Of Angels Volume 7 Marc Ribot I John Zom Three of the most intense musicians on the planet come together in one of the most explosive and rockin' ensembles around. Conducted/composed by avant jazz hero John Zorn, I can guarantee that you've never heard anything quite like this before. Backed by Trevor Dunn (Fantomas, Moonchild) on bass and the legendary G.Calvin Weston (Omette Coleman, James Blood Ulmer) on drums, guitar hero Marc Ribot plays like never before. Referencing Hendrix, Sharrock, McLaughlin, Ulmer and more, the music takes on a whole new dimension. Passionate and powerful, this is one of the most compelling installments in the entire Masada series and contains some of Ribot's wildest and best playing ever. This CD will blow your mind.
