Krauss Professor, SESE and Physics Co-Director, Cosmology Initiative I am writing this confidential letter to infeFni-yeu-ef-my-deeisien-reauest to retire from my position as Professor in the School of Earth and Space Exploration and Physics Department at ASU at the end of this academic year, May 16, 2019, and will move on to explore new challenges outside of ASU after that. Following my retirement, I will take advantage of all standard retirement benefits. Coming to ASU to create and lead the Origins Project and create and build a thriving Cosmology Initiative in the Physics Department and School of Earth and Space Exploration has been a highlight of my academic career. Watching Origins grow to become internationally recognized for its unique blend of transdisciplinary workshops bringing the best scientist and scholars from around the world together to explore forefront foundational questions across the full breadth of human inquiry, combined with the development of unique public programs that regularly filled the 2700 seat Gammage auditorium right from our Inaugural event onward, and were watched online either during the event or after by literally millions of people, and the development of new educational resources on the Origins Web Portal, has been immensely satisfying. I think it exceeded many of our expectations when we first discussed creating the program back in 2007 on my first visit to ASU. Being able to recruit over a half dozen excellent new faculty to Physics and SESE, plus two Nobel Laureates to ASU has. I believe, helped raise the research profile of the University as well, and has also helped us recruit new talented students to the University. And my experience teaching seminars in the Barrett Honors College has also been immensely satisfying, and I was very pleased with the positive student response to those courses. All of this makes the events of the seven months or so even more disappointing. Following the unfortunate abrupt cancellation by the University of the Origins 10th anniversary celebration, and the subsequent termination of The Origins Project in September, and along with it the dismantling of both the organization I had established, and the online resources we have developed, which after all was the prime reason I relocated to ASU in the first place, I find there is less cause for me to remain here after this academic year. Compounding this motivation to consider leaving. my recent experience at the University following the publication of unfounded and inappropriate allegations against me by an online tabloid has left me feeling disillusioned. I have described some of my concerns in detail to you documents I sent you on August 24th and 28'h and 301h appealing the Dean's recommendation of dismissal and contesting the Provost's determinations based on the determinations from the Office of Equity and Inclusion. Through the various processes. I have experienced what I can think are accurately descried 1 EFTA00812435 as: violations of due process. disregard for evidence, discrimination and bias, violation of ABOR regulations, and an environment associated with the investigation and the communication and resolution of issues that followed it that was by turns adversarial, hostile, disingenuous or unresponsive. Thus, in spite of the fact that what you stated to the State Press in March remains true—namely, not a single one of my students, faculty colleagues, anv staff member in my academic departments, postdoctoral researchers, or any of the thousands of participants in our Origins events over the past decade has complained to the University about my behavior at ASU. (Generally quite the contrary. in fact.)—my recent experience over the past seven months suggests to me that it will likely not be a safe environment for me to seriously consider continuing my active teaching, research and service activities on campus after this academic year. I bring these facts up here now not merely to help explain my own motivations for choosing to retire, or to harp on my own experience, but I write out of a broader concern for ASU and the University community. I think it will be useful to reflect on how my experiences can benefit others in the long term, by suggesting broader actions that you could take to improve the functioning of the University and ultimately produce a safer and more productive environment for everyone at ASU.
