Keridwen is a friend from Phoenix who was editor of Phoenix Magazine and has been a joumalist for many years, and who offered to help if I was writing a statement. Anyway, there are many good points here. I thought I would send this to you in confidence, because I know a number of the recommendations here resonate with your thoughts... today is not a bad day so far.. yesterday was. Happily Steve Pinker is happily coming to Origins and has agreed to moderate the public panel I was planning on moderating. anyway, Nancy and I are working away on this for the moment. Feeling less pressure to release, you will be happy to know. Lawrence Lawrence M. Your first version says many good things, though many things can be significantly improved, and I make those suggestions. You will see that throughout, I make comments like "this sentence implies/conveys/sounds like..." When I do that, I am not suggesting that this is what you are thinking or that this is what occurred; I am saying that this is how it may well be interpreted by the public, based upon my knowledge of psychology and my awareness of the emotional flavor of every word in the English language. Below the text with my comments, I present a clean version that is what I think you should say. It removes or rephrases damning statements and words, and makes you sound like a better and more believable person. I also corrected the grammatical and spelling errors, not only because that is what I do but because sloppy grammar implies unclear and frustrated thinking, whereas perfect grammar implies you are calm and rational. I made my edits within the second version purely because the first version had so many colors and track changes in it that it would have been confusing. But let me be clear: The second version is a career death warrant. We will discuss this more in person, but for now, you absolutely must take out everything that says the incidents as described in the Buzzfeed article do not constitute sexual harassment. I cannot state this firmly enough. As for when to release the statement, I do not have enough information to advise you on that since I do not know what you're hearing from ASU, particularly with regard to the imminent/delayed/canceled (?) 10th anniversary events. I will say that the quality and sincerity of the statement is far more important than the timing, since this is your one chance to save your career. EFTA00868928
