Thank you for your email, Blake. Congratulations on all your successes! I am working on a manuscript you
might be able to help with. Are you considering spending the summer here at UCLA?

I am a sophomore at the Bronx High School of Science, one of the top high schools in the nation. I am
proud to be a student here, where 8 Nobel prize winners have grpduated. My GPA is 96.4, which puts me in
the top group of students in this school. I have always loved math and science, and music. Your research has
deeply inspired me, as I would love to use my love for math and apply it to musical studies and neuroscience.
My dream is to work on a research project in your area of expertise.
In order to be better prepared to assist you in your research, I have been leaming to program in
Python and Matlab. I am also an accomplished musician and an athlete. I won NYC piano competitions such
as the Piano Teachers Congress of New York, and I attend Mannes for music. I also write music and attended
the math team for many years, where I just won the concerto competition recently. I have developed excellent
discipline and organizational skills via sports, where have gotten 4th place at national level tennis
tournaments. I use my creativity in all aspects of my life, from academics to music to research. As it is very
hard to balance all of these activities, my perseverance and time management prevails in all of my
extracurriculars and academics. Working with you as my mentor for research would be a dream come true for
me, allowing me to creatively explore aspects of math and neuroscience that I could not have otherwise.
Your research has really inspired me to pursue this idea of analyzing music on a mathematical and
neurological level.
I would be forever indebted if you could find time in your busy schedule to discuss a possibility of mentorship.
Thank you very much. I am looking forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Blake
