Now, he writes that his PSA is rising (despite surgery, radiation, extra drugs) and he is reaching out for advice. He is 74, the same age as our father when he died of prosate cancer. Ten years ago, I met him at my TED dinner in February 2001. Months later, on a hot Sunday afternoon in August, he called me out of the blue at Eastover Farm, and said he remembered my mentioning that my older brother Philip, a NASA physicist, had prostate cancer. He talked to me for over an hour, and suggested Philip go to see top specialist, a Dr. Patrick Walsh in Baltimore, which he could help facilitate. It was an act of kindness that quite amazing to me. However, my brother's brilliance as a physicist comes with the expense of all kinds of phobias, one of which is a fear of travel. He would not budge from Raleigh-Durham, where he now lives.
