dear Martin, It is great to meet Jeffrey today,He is clearly a very talented man, I am also grateful , on behalf
of the dept, that he is willing to fund the summer program for 100K.
It is a good start.
What I was asking him was to get some funding to help to retain Richard and several great outstanding
professors in the dept by providing some slash fund to supplement summer salary or some other activities ,
basically to supplement their salary. He can set up an endowed fund of 1.5 million, and split into 6 parts, to
fund about 6 faculties that way.
Of course, we should name the fund after him.
Do you think there is a chance he may do that?
Of course, I shall come up with some serious proposal on what he was talking about what math dept will
need.
best regards
yau

Dear Professor Yau,
Ms. Annie Wu stopped by to see me yesterday, and she mentioned she had also spoken with you. I am not
sure she talked with Ms. Cao Tian, a math major at Univ of Wisconsin who came directly from Beijing.
Apparently Ms. Cao is a strong student, interested in graduate study at Harvard, and has studied the Theory
of Single Variable Calculus mathematical applications for scientific data analysis. She is interested in
working for a Harvard professor as an intern from late July until late August this year. Is she someone you,
another professor in your department, or a graduate student you know would be willing to oversee for a

month this summer?
Funding is not a problem. Her resume is attached.
Best regards,
Jon
