From: To: CC: Subject: A/V System refresh Date: Tue, 17 Apr 2012 14:23:59 -0400 Hi Richard, Pleasure speaking with you yesterday. As we discussed the following is a bit of background on my company followed by our suggestions and recommendations for a system refresh in the media room, not sure what that room is called. Cutting Edge Systems has been in business since 2005, my partner and I have over 25 year's experience in the electronics and custom installation/integration field. Our entire staff is CEDIA certified, we are members of CEA and Info Comm. Our clients include Ralph Lauren and Edgar Bronfman Jr., we've designed and engineered jobs for Calvin Klein and Jerry Seinfeld just to name a few. A portion of our business does include what we call system rescues, this is when we take on client's who've had terrible experiences and poorly working systems installed by other AN companies and turn the entire job around. Not only is the initial installation important but our service and maintenance of a system ranks equally as high. Either the same day or within 24hrs of a call made to us a tech will be on site to address any issues that may arise with the system. Now on to the recommendation's for the system. I'd like to start with the control aspect first meaning the remote, currently there's a cinder block of a remote in that room. That remote, a ST-1700, is a discontinued model from Crestron and it has very limited service provided by them if it breaks down. I would like to see a dedicated iPad as the main remote with a rack mounted touch panel (as you can see from image 1 I've attached from the Ralph Lauren residence) as a backup if there are WiFi issues or something happens to the iPad itself. I would remove the Monster Power units and replace them with 1 Furman power management/backup battery unit that offers system monitoring and email alerts if something happens to any piece of equipment in the rack, it also allows remote rebooting of devices so the rack doesn't need to be pulled out every time. I've spoken with some of our authorized repair partners about the Sony projector and to have that unit sent in for service really doesn't pay, there are a few similar units being sold on EBay for $5000 which is almost how much it would cost to have the unit shipped out and repaired which in our opinion isn't worth it. We can spec EFTA00933478 out a projector that is a modern equivalent to the Sony but some considerations must be made, first is the screen. Currently you have a 4:3 aspect ratio screen with a 16:9 masking, that's the secondary black panels that come down to narrow the screen. There really isn't any content anymore that lends itself to a 4:3 screen, what we would like to see is a 2.35:1 aspect ratio screen also called a Cinemascope screen along with an anamorphic lens. This combo will give you a full picture on the screen, no squished and stretched image (as seen in attached image 2 and 3. Image 3 is what you have currently and image 2 is what can be achieved, please note there will be no black bars on top and bottom of image, this was the best sample I could find) exactly what 35mm films are meant to be displayed in. Please let me know what direction you'd like to go and we'll begin the process, also feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have regarding this system refresh.
