David Hi Jeffrey, Here are some materials related to my vision for the pursuit of Genius Machines, including the attached white paper summary of the Genius Machines project (under the title of the GENI-Lab), my CV, and the following summary statement of my aspirations for the lab: 1. I strive for Genius Machines — machines with greater-than-human capabilities, especially consciousness, creativity and compassion. To this purpose, I propose founding the Lab for Friendly Genius Machines, a.k.a. GENT-Lab, to create brilliant robots that literally come to life. 2. The GENI-Lab will pursue the superdiscipline of artificial genius, bridging the arts, A.I., robotics, sciences of mind, and bio-inspired engineering. Each GENT--an acronym for GENeration of Intelligence—represents an iterative step towards Genius Machines. EFTA00952923 3. The GENI-Lab aspires to understand the physical/mathematical nature of mind, creativity, play, ethics, and compassion, and test its theories within embodied anthropomorphic characters, including androids. When embodied as such, GENI may inspire love, learn from intuitive interactions with people, and grow to understand us better. Such character-GENI also help to scientifically investigate human perception and relationships. 4. Testing human responses to such GENI robots can help scientifically investigate human perception, and improve human-agent interactions. Raising AGI among people as characters may develop machine empathy. Yet, this work could produce unintended consequences; therefore, we will investigate potential hazards of human-AGI interactions, both theoretically and experimentally. 5. The GENI-Lab will bring together neurally-inspired software design, with cutting-edge A.I. research, to achieve unprecedented models of human personalities and intelligence. By modeling actual human personalities in detail, we are able to test our theories against the actual performance of humans. 6. The arts also function centrally in GENI-Lab methodology—providing intuitive models of mind, social percepts, and creativity, propelling functionality beyond what engineering alone can achieve. Similarly, industry partnerships are critical (medical, entertainment, therapy, toys, etc), providing valuable data and feedback from real world uses, and a natural ecology for machines to develop genius abilities. In general, the GENI-Lab is open and participatory, open-sourcing most of its work, forging worldwide alliances in a bottom-up "Apollo Program" to achieve Friendly Genius Machines. To this end, the GENI-Lab will push our GLUE.ai initiative, to bridge existing Al and related activitities, to enable rapid development of new generations of intelligent systems, both within the GENI-Lab, and by groups around the world. The GENI-Lab will also seek fundamental understanding of the 7. I am uniquely qualified to found and help lead the GENI-Lab, with expertise and accomplishments in robotics, art practice, A.I., technoculture, cognitive science, material science, and business. My works in expressive androids with intelligent conversations, and my cognitive science research on the Uncanny Valley, are widely cited. My android portraits of Philip K Dick, Einstein, and Bina Rothblatt achieved breakthroughs in mind uploading—using A.I. and large datasets to create functional portraits of existing personalities. The GENI-Lab will extend this work into bold new directions. 8. My entrepreneurship, fundraising, and manufacturing experience, both in U.S. and China, demonstrate that I can transform ideas by teamwork into disruptive results. My companies Hanson Robotics Inc and Hanson RoboKind LLC successfully deliver product to scientific research, medical, and consumer markets. New leadership at these companies enables my renewed focus on research. However, my ownership of these companies, and relations with many others, offer strong channels to commercially deploy results of GENI-Lab research. I also bring exceptional proficiency in the arts. With a BFA in film from RISD, professional experience as sculptor and designer, and exhibitions at museums around the world, I know the power of aesthetics, narrative, and unbridled creativity. Treated as narrative/figurative art, intelligent characters serve as scaffolds from which to grow social A.I. Diversified creativity explores the poetry as well as principles of intelligent agents, supplying surprise, fueling evolution. 9. My history demonstrates successful transdisciplinary collaborations with distinguished artists, scientists, and businesses, with examples including JPL-physicist Yoseph Bar-Cohen, artist David Byrne, neuroscience researchers Javier Movellan, Alice O'Toole and many others. I cofounded the 2006 European Indigo consortium of cognitive robotics, winning over $6M Euro in EU funding, resulting in ground-breaking robots and open-source software. I founded and directed numerous other teams, for robotics, material science, and AI. I bring these experiences and relations to the GENI-Lab, as well as strong Hong Kong collaborations, including with Ben Goertzel, businessman T.S. Wong and his company Jetta, and many other local scientists and engineers. 10. In general Hong Kong provides an ideal milieu for the GENI-Lab, proven as a world-center in robotics and Al research, robotics manufacturing, philanthropy, and investment, so provides a perfect culture for growing Genius Machines. From here, we will coordinate with research around the globe, to solve problems with an international force of leaders in research. 11. Co-founding the GENI-Lab with renowned A.I. researcher Ben Goertzel and roboticist Mark Tilden, provides the proper base for success, as each of us brings global connections for international collaborations, and world class expertise in domains related to the pursuit of Genius Machines. EFTA00952924 12. The GENI-Lab will work by series of spectacular sprints towards tangible results, striving for minimum of 4 such sprints per year. Each sprint will seek to demonstrate thrilling results in interactive robots and agents, built with fundamental breakthroughs in science, that additively advance our technology towards ever-more brilliant machines. Using these methods with my brilliant colleagues, the GENI-Lab will unleash great surges in progress towards the most transformative technology in the history of Earth. 13. Eagerly I anticipate realizing Friendly Genius Machines together with you in coming days. Thank you for your consideration. EFTA00700552 - Goertzel-Arel 'Robot Toddler' AGI Proposal for Epstein Foundation

DOJ-released document from Data Set 9 containing the draft research and development proposal prepared by AI researchers Ben Goertzel and Itamar Arel for the Jeffrey Epstein VI Foundation. The proposal outlines a $3 million project to develop a 'robotic AGI toddler' — an artificial general intelligence system 'with the rough general intelligence of a human 3-4 year old child, demonstrated via embodiment in virtual world characters and humanoid robots.' Arel was designated as primary investigator, contributing his DeSTIN (Deep SpatioTemporal Inference Network) facial recognition system developed at the University of Tennessee using graduate student labor. Goertzel, who received direct salary from the Epstein Foundation, proposed the project and suggested additional hundreds of thousands in funding for Arel's research assistants. This document is central to understanding Epstein's funding of cutting-edge AI research through academic intermediaries.
