Spent parts of yesterday wth Joi - there is a big danger of "more of the same" over at the lab. There is a lot of
"show" but I think that this is a mask and a lot of the of the areas are actually sleepy.
Perhaps a society of fellows model between Martin and Joi might work. The focus could be post-docs and
visiting genius-level persons offered as 1-year "prize fellows", which could be renwable for another year.
Neither Joi or Martin want it, but there should be an external selection board to ensure absolute excellence in
the appointments. I have structures off the shelf where I could be on such a board (with a veto for anyone who
does not fit), and you might consider the same. But this has to be treated with real care because academics
don't like others to share decisions (I've made it work in the past, at Chicago and elsewhere; it just requires
good trust and the ability to apply pressure when and where neede)
