I have been caught between two worlds-- regulation and unregulation-- for a few years now. I work directly on the bitcoin system- for fun. For work, I am now leaving LedgerX, the first CFTC-regulated bitcoin clearinghouse, after working there for 4 years as their expert on bitcoin and software development. I wrote up a draft blog post which should be posting soon regarding my departure, where I go into some background on regulation vs unregulation. The LedgerX thesis is "regulation first", which is practically contrarian in the startup ecosystem. However, I sincerely wonder whether regulators are anymore able to regulate or enforce the law in these markets-- so much time has passed and I have so little evidence of action being taken against these companies. What we're seeing, or not seeing, is really interesting.
