Subject: Kofi
Dear Nane,
I have been using the last few days in Greece to come to terms with my sadness of Kofi passing away.
He was without any comparison the best boss I have ever had. He was the grand master of diplomacy and a
steady moral compass for us all. His disarming, humane laughter and his glamorous smile charmed and melted
the tempers of friends and foes alike. It has been a privilege and a thrill to work for and with him those many
years in New York and in the Middle East, and even more to become his friend. And it is the last which now is at
the forefront of my mind: his caring and his tenderness not only for me, but also for Mona, Emma and Edward.
Mona and I will never forget when it stormed at worst around me in the Middle East, how he called Mona every
day to give comfort and support. He did much more than standing by his people. He once told me:" Terje, we
work in the big world, but we have equally to care about the small world, the world of family, friends and
colleagues ." I felt that sentence said so much about who he was, his decency and caring character.
His creativity and courage in diplomacy was exceptional, seeing possibilities where others only saw
impossibilities. Without his courage and innovative skills the Israeli military withdrawal from Lebanon , and
later Syria's pull out ,would never have taken place.
I will deeply miss his British understated, soft-spoken mild manners and his seductive African charm.
He only once raised his voice with me. We had a disagreement before I went on a secret mission for him to the
White House. As I landed in Washington my phone rang. He was on the line to apologize for loosing his temper!
There was no reason, but it spoke volumes about his decency, tenderness and caring.
Dear Nane, the most deep felt condolences from Mona and myself. May God give you and the family strength
in these difficult times for you.
Warmest regards
Terje
