Daniel Harding juxtaposes Mahler's First Symphony with works by Alban Berg and Charles Ives, contemporaries whose musical language has similarities as well as major differences to Mahler. An exciting journey of discovery. WATCH REHEARSAL Photo: Monika Rittershaus r r Powerful light and shadow EFTA01033865 New in the archive: Sir Simon Rattle conducts Schumann and Lachenmann Like all works by Helmut Lachenmann, the composition My Melodies for eight horns and orchestra also represents a vivid aural adventure. This performance by the Berliner Philharmoniker, only the second orchestra to play the work, was conducted by Sir Simon Rattle. It was followed by Robert Schumann's Second Symphony, whose performance revealed the familiarity between the orchestra and its former chief conductor: "The score opens out to a become a musical expression of nature, with powerful light and shadow effects, expansive melodies, luminous timbres, and energetic drive" (Der Tagesspiegel). WATCH CONCERT Photo: Monika Rittershaus The future of the great orchestras Free of charge: Jorg Widmann conducts the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie The Junge Deutsche Philharmonie, whose members are music students between the ages of 18 and 28, gave a guest performance in Berlin at the end of their spring tour. Between works by Mendelssohn and Schumann, they played the impressive, purely instrumental Messe for large orchestra by J6rg Widmann, one of the most versatile musicians of our time. In this concert, Widmann took on the roles of both solo clarinettist and conductor, spurring the young, gifted musicians on to performances as virtuosic as they were expressive: "These are the musicians of the future of the great orchestras" (Kulturradio). EFTA01033866 WATCH CONCERT Spectacularly beautiful Recommendation of the week: 2003 European Concert with Pierre Boulez and Maria Joao Pires Pierre Boulez was an outstanding interpreter of Bartok and Ravel, making this film document of the 2003 European Concert with Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra and Ravel's Le Tombeau de Couperin all the more precious. This recording from the spectacularly beautiful Mosterio dos Jeronimos near Lisbon also provides the rare opportunity to experience Boulez conducting Mozart in the composer's Piano Concerto No. 20, with Lisbon-born Maria Joao Pires as the soloist.
