SURVEY OF DEBRIS TO BE CLEANED UP ON GREAT ST. JAMES SURVEY METHODS A detailed survey was conducted along most roadways and trails on Great St. James. A handheld GPS was used to mark each noted debris pile and photographs were take which are representative of the debris present. FINDINGS There are numerous dirt roadways throughout the island of Great St. James. The vast majority of these roadways are older and most are well packed, there a few areas where it was obvious the roads were newer with loose rocks and unpack soils. There are piles of very old vegetation as well as more recently cleared brush along the roadways. There are numerous large logs and stumps in the bush and brush piles. There are pieces of fiberglass from boat hulls on several of the beaches and some scattered in the bush along the roadways. Up near the warehouse/back of house area there are some broke pieces of machinery, a part of a boat trailer, left over construction debris (wire rolls, PVC, rotten wood) and large chunks of broken concrete. Much of the material could be collect by small machine and the best use for the smaller brush would be mulching for use for erosion control. For the larger stumps, logs and machinery parts larger equipment will be required in order to collect and dispose of the material. The white squares indicate areas where debris, primarily in the form of cut bush, are pile alongside the road. In most areas the debris piles are 10'-12' in length and extend less than 8' from the road edge. The orange squares indicate debris piles which extended more than 8' from the roadway. These piles contained larger tree stumps and logs. The red squares indicate areas with large machinery pieces (engines, radiators, construction wire, construction debris). The blue squares indicate large debris piles which usually extend more than 20' along the road and are often as deep as 20'. along the road side .
