Upon release, it was banned in communist Poland and fascist Spain. In the 1970s, the original negative of the film was destroyed in a fire. Now, the film, which Terry Gilliam calls "brilliant," is being given a chance at a second life, through a restoration effort that hopes to bring it to contemporary audiences.
