Evening.
Autumn Season and Highlights
We are delighted to announce an Evening with Martin Amis, the acclaimed author of
two collections of stories, six works of non-fiction, and thirteen previous novels, most
recently The Zone of Interest. Martin Amis will be in conversation with Gaby Wood,
Head of Books at the Telegraph.
There was an old story about a king who asked his favourite wizard to create a

magic mirror. This mirror didn't show you your reflection. Instead, it showed you your
soul — it showed you who you really were. But the king couldn't look into the mirror
without turning away, and nor could his courtiers. No one could.
What happens when we discover who we really are? And how do we come to terms
with it? Fearless and original, The Zone of Interest is a violently dark love story set
against a backdrop of unadulterated evil, and a vivid journey into the depths and
contradictions of the human soul.

Understanding self-control and How to

with Walter Mischel
A LUNCHTIME TALK from Walter Mischel. one of the World's
most influential psychologists and inventor of the original 1960s
marshmallow experiments.
" A child is presented with a marshmallow and given a choice: eat
this one now, or wait and enjoy two later. What will she do? How
will she resist? And how does her ultimate choice shed light on
the kind of adult she"ll eventually become?
The marshmallow studies have proven to predict - to a surprising
degree - a child' s chances for future success. Now in this
lunchtime talk, Walter Mischel, the inventor of this landmark study
and pioneer of the study of self-control shares what he'
learned
over decades of ground-breaking research and clearly explains

Mythology
with Philip Womack
What do you know about Medea, Electra, or Phaedra? Are
figures like this all Greek to you? Greek myths are everywhere:
on the stage, at the opera, in the galleries. It sometimes seems
like you can't move for Olympians, nymphs and Titans. Whether
you've forgotten everything you've ever read about the Greeks,
or don't know your Odysseus from your Oedipus, this
entertaining evening's talk will give you all you ever needed to
know about some of the greatest stories ever told.
Philip Womack was educated at Lancing and Oriel College.
where he read Classics and English. His second novel, The
Liberators, takes Euripides' Bacchae as its starting point. He has
taught Latin and Greek for a decade, and is a regular reviewer of
books with classical themes. His third novel, the first in The
Darkening Path trilogy, was published in June 2014.

how to: Tennessee Williams: Mad
Pilgrimage of the Flesh
with John Lahr
When The Glass Menagerie opened on 31 March 1945, it was
greeted with rapturous acclaim and twenty-four standing
ovations: Tennessee Williams spoke to a new America, liberated
from years of wartime hardship. A homosexual, alcoholic, drug-
addicted genius, Williams was raised in Mississippi, the son of a
neurotic Southern belle and a hard-drinking travelling shoe-
salesman. The most autobiographical of twentieth century
playwrights, 'everything in his life', said Elia Kazan. 'is in his
plays, and everything in his plays is in his life'. Their titles alone —
A Streetcar Named Desire, The Night of the Iguana and Cat on a
Hot Tin Roof - take us to the heart of a world of tense emotional
truths and spiritual transformations.
Tennessee Williams has found his perfect biographer in John
Lahr, legendary drama critic of the New Yorker and author of
Prick Up Your Ears: The Biography of Joe Orton. In what
promises to be an unforgettable evening, Lahr will discuss the on
and off-stage dramas of Williams, including his early breakdown
