Importing Personal Property Into US Virgin Islands IMPORTING HOUSEHOLD GOODS & PERSONAL EFFECTS DUTY-FREE ENTRY IS PERMITTED IF THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS ARE MET: • Used household goods and personal effects have been owned by the shipper for one year or more. • All new household goods are dutiable, as determined by the customs officials. • 4% overall tax on HHG and autos based on the value. $1,000.00 exemption with the balance multiplied at 4%. Need commercial invoice or document declaring value. REQUIRED DOCUMENTS: For All Shippers:  Detailed inventory. RESTRICTED/DUTIBALE ITEMS: • Alcohol and tobacco products are subject to import duties and taxes. Importation is not recommended. • Drugs and medicines. • New items are subject to duties. • Bicycles • Firearms and ammunition PROHIBITED ITEMS: Drugs and narcotics Firearms IMPORTATION OF MOTOR VEHICLES: Foreign-made automobiles (manufactured outside the US), are dutiable at 6% of the Blue Book value. Virgin Island Road Tax is $0.16 per pound for all vehicles imported. • 4% overall tax on autos based on the value. Vehicles must meet all US and EPA standards. • Original title required. • If there is a lien on the vehicle, an original notarized copy of the title and an original letter for exportation from the lien holder is required. • Bill of Sale to determine tax for all vehicles. (Also to determine duty for foreign- manufactured vehicles.) IMPORTATION OF PETS: Veterinarian Certificate certifying that all shots have been administered is required.
