EFTA01221836 Africa is not just a vacation for me; it's a chance for me to give back to my true homeland. Since I was old enough to understand slavery and the struggle that Africans went through, and African Americans after them, it has opened my eyes to the greatness Africa used to be. However, I believe that Africa still has the potential to be ten times more than what it is now. Things such as wars, the slave trade, and blood diamonds operations, over time, have demolished the rich pure land. I feel like it is not only morally correct but also my duty to give back and help out through community service. This is the best way I can assure that what I am giving will directly benefit the African Community. In me there is so much culture, from African descent to Philipino to Trinidadian and much more. I love knowing my family and my roots; I believe it's good to know where you came from before you know where you are going, which is why my history plays a lot into my life. I have explored Trinidad my whole life and have visited the many other islands where my family resides. Although I am not aware of any family in Africa I know my roots hail from some tribe there, I may not be meeting them but I still want to help to make Africa a better place. When I heard the stories of Malcolm X and Nelson Mandela I was empowered, they fought for what they believed in and set out to help the oppressed nation. I do not believe I can do much now but manual labor and that's fine. But in the future, during college or after, I hope to do much more. After getting the education I need to do so. It would be best for me to grasp this opportunity with the Rwanda Project, and come back with an even better understanding of the situation that affects the everyday lives of people going through this long standing epidemic. EFTA01221837 To: UVI Rwanda Project Fm: Jim Willen Teacher Gifft Hill School, St. John, USVI Re: Recommendation of Zenobia Howe May 5, 2009 I strongly endorse Zenobia Howe for inclusion into the UVI's Rwanda project. I have known Zenobia for two years. I have had her as a student in my clactes and currently have her in my home room. During that time, Zenobia has impressed me with her outgoing and friendly attitude and her affinity for sports. She has been on several sports teams, most recently on the Gifft Hill women's basketball team. Zenobia gets along well with her teachers and peers and would be an asset to any group activity. She has traveled extensively so going to Africa will not present a challenge to her but an adventure. I strongly recommend Zenobia for the UVI's Rwanda project.
