The Harvard situation is still uncertain, but hopefully s=me kind of clarity will emerge over the next few months or so. Independently of whether I return to Harvard, take another leav=, or some other combination of options, I am writing to see if you might be=willing to provide some support for an initiative that I have launched to c=eate a Center for Learning and Understanding (CLU), one linked to using the=insights from the cognitive and neurosciences to ameliorate the sorry situa=ion of education in this country. It will be linked to the school I mention=d (penikese) that deals with extremely high risk kids, but will also serve t= develop new tools for assessment, intervention, and improved capacities fo= critical reasoning and understanding. We already have a donor who ha= provided a gorgeous old house in woods hole that will serve as the center'= base. We are in the process of developing new computer-based tools f=r assessment, intervention and teaching. We have the fortunate situat=on of being located in Woods Hole, a mecca for top notch research (the WH o=eanographic, Marine Biological Labs, a branch of the National Academy of Scrences), and with many in the area interested in creating this center. =But we need some financial support to seed things and get it off the ground= The house is a huge start. As a teacher, I hope this might be of int=rest to you. I can say a lot more and would be happy to speak. We don=t need vast amounts of money, just some to get things going.
