Have the media been unfair to McCain?
1 it )I3t_
by James Ofiphanr
John l-larris and Jim vandeHei, the editors of the Washington-
based newspaper Pollhco, have covered a few campaigns in
their time. The former Washington Post writers Tuesday attempted to
explain why their newspaper has covered Barack Obama more favorably
than John McCain.
Harris and vandeHei do not deny that this has occurred. Their piece
Tuesday was an attempt to explain the numbers in the recent Pew
Research Center poll that found that over the six weeks since
the Republican convention, got four times as many negative stories as
positive ones. The study found six out of 10 McCain stories were
negahve.
Iet's just get this over with: Yes, in the closing weeks of this
election, John McCain and Sarah Palin are getting hosed in the press,
and at Poia`ti`co," Harris and vandel-lei write.
But, they argue, the fault doesn't lie with them but with McCain.
Basically, they're saying: It's not our fault you've run such a lousy
campaign.

which Obama has talked about eliminating. The agency. which has the

years. When it last came up for re-authorization. in 2004. the House

The Pinocchio Test
Promises to cut government spending are pretty much worthless unless
accompanied by convincing explanations of how precisely they will be
implemented. Obama has failed this basic test. Vague targets are
insufncient particularly when there is no real link between the promised
spending cuts and the new spending programs.
