Clean Slate FAQs Q: What is the goal of Clean Slate? A: Clean Slate aims to give people an opportunity to resolve an outstanding New York City summons warrant without fear of arrest. Q: I received a summons in a borough other than Manhattan. Can I still have my warrant resolved at Clean Slate? A: Yes, you can. Any summons warrant issued in New York City qualifies. Warrant holders from all five boroughs are encouraged to come. Q: I have a summons-related warrant for an offense that is not listed on your flyer. Can I still have my warrant resolved at Clean Slate? A: Yes. All warrants connected to summonses are eligible for Clean Slate. Exceptions include traffic tickets and transit tickets – see below. Q: I have an outstanding traffic ticket. Can I still have my warrant resolved at Clean Slate? A: No. Moving violations are addressed by the Department of Motor Vehicles. Q: I received a transit ticket on the bus or subway. Can I still have my warrant resolved at Clean Slate? A: No. All transit summonses are addressed by the Transit Adjudication Bureau. Q: I have not received a letter from the Courts or the NYPD about Clean Slate. May I still attend? A: Yes. All warrants connected to summonses issued in New York City may qualify. Q: My summons-related offense has been answered, but it was never cleared from my record. Can I have this issue cleared from my record at Clean Slate? A: Public Defenders will be present at Clean Slate sites to provide advice about the steps you can take to clear your record. Q: What happens if I have a more serious offense on my record and I come to Clean Slate? A: Public Defenders will provide advice about how to handle your outstanding misdemeanor or felony warrant. Q: I have been re-arrested multiple times for summons-related warrants on my record. Does this arrest history exclude me from Clean Slate? A: No, all summons warrants will be handled at Clean Slate Q: What other resources are available at the Clean Slate event? A: Job training, healthcare provision, legal assistance, and general social service assistance will be among the resources available at Clean Slate. Q: Do I need to take identification with me to Clean Slate? A: Yes, you will need to bring a photo ID. Q: Can I address someone else’s warrant at Clean Slate? A: No, the judge will only consider cases where the individual that was issued the warrant is present. Q: I received a summons very recently and I have not yet had a court date. Can I address the summons at Clean Slate? A: No, Clean Slate is only for outstanding summons warrants. Those who have summonses with a future court date will not be able to see the judge at Clean Slate. Q: Can I bring family members with me to Clean Slate? A: Only warrant holders are allowed in the waiting room and court room, but family members are welcome on the Clean Slate event grounds, including at the resource fair. Q: I lost my original summons. Can I come without it? A: Yes, staff at Clean Slate will be able to access your original summons. Q: I am an undocumented immigrant. Can I participate? A: Yes, anyone with an open summons warrant can address it at Clean Slate, regardless of immigration status. Q: I don’t speak English. Will you have translators? A: Yes, there will be interpreters available at Clean Slate. Q: Once the summons warrant is resolved, will it be erased from my criminal record? A: The warrant will be erased and you will receive a letter from the court showing your case was resolved.
