1. What was / has been your occupation before entering politics?
After graduating from Carleton University in engineering I started my own encryption
and data security firm. I've continued to work in small ventures until this day.
2. Do you live in the riding and, if so, how long has it been your home?
I live in Nepean, went to Confederation High School before Barrhaven ever had its own
high school and have lived here with my wife since 2005, we have two children.
3. What has been your main involvement with your community outside of work
(volunteer activities, etc.)?
I've spent years on my community association's board, helping run activities in the
community, and I am currently the president. I founded a Neighbourhood Watch, and I
consistently help any way I can - park improvements, bike infrastructure, programmes
for seniors, etc. I also did some work years ago with Make-a-Wish and I regularly
donate to our local food cupboard - FAMSAC.ca
4. In your life what event, or book, or speech, or song or even TV show has made
the biggest impression on you and your political thinking? Why?
"You must be the change you want to see in the world" - Gandhi. It is such a simple and
universal statement. You can take it to mean "reach out and help someone" or, for the
more cynical, "shut up and fix it". But most of all it speaks to the simple power one
human possesses to not be idle when action is required.
5. What previous politician, (alive or dead, but not currently in parliament) is a
role model for you?
Angus McLintock, a fictional politician from the book "The Best Laid Plans" by Terry
Fallis, which centres around a curmudgeonly, flawed, accidental MP who is thrust into
parliament and becomes a key figure. I find many real-life politicians have so many real
flaws that it is better to model yourself on someone fictional.
6. What policy in your party’s platform do you think matters most to the people in
your riding?
Tough call. It's evenly split between our goal to be the party of small business (since big
business seems to have their pick of the rest) and our climate change plan "Mission:
Possible". Nepean is well educated with the advantage of being able to consider longer
term goals. Our young and diverse riding hungers for climate action and
entrepreneurship.
7. Recent polls suggest many Canadians are disillusioned with politics. If elected,
what would you do to address those concerns?
Being in a party that does not whip votes, I am free to represent Nepean without the
burden of toeing the party line. I will be pragmatic about decisions, truly consulting
constituents and realizing that Nepean is but one voice in a choir of 338 members of
parliament.
