Grundstrom MISS NUDE USA anion PAGEANT ounrvin tad , J uly 3rd kicked off the summertime festivities in Illinois, with the 4TH of .. ..y weekend and the 2005 Miss Nude USA Pageant in full swing. This year's location for the show of shows was the fabulous Gallery Showbar in Desoto, IL. Which has been deemed one of the wildest strip clubs in the state. One of the largest pageants on the circuit today, the USA's usually attracts some pretty big name features from the stage and screen. This vear was no exception, with entertainers from all over the U.5. converging on the great state of Illinois, for a shot at a very coveted title. The only other titles in this league are: Miss Nude Galaxy. Miss Nude World, Deja Vu's Showgirl of the Year, Miss Nude International and Miss Nude Universe. That's the ceiling. You can't get any higher than that in a performance pageant. Why are these carnal cavalcades of confusion. comedy and curvy contortionist's so important to feature entertainers in the adult business? The answer can be summed up in one word: "Credits." Credits are the claim to fame of every feature entertainer and porn star. Feature cir- cuit entertainers need exposure to become a household word, whether it is magazine credits, pageant credits or (nowadays) television credits. (I.E. Springer, Geraldo, Jenny Jones etc.) Porn stars collect movie credits, box cover credits, stage, magazine and TV credits as well. It's all about "What you've won and what youve done.' And as they say in the business: "You're only as good as your last picture," which invokes constantly accumulating new cred- its to stay in the industry spotlight. This is how the booking agents gauge your popJlarity, as well as your show price and movie prices. The more credits, the more cash, simple. Hardly so... titles, magazine covers and box cover's are sought out by all, and can take years to gather. But many performers work at it every day, and move up fast. Others a-e not so lucky. So the bottom line is obviously "Competitive. When you are competing for careers and cash, it is a serious business. But, the sweetest kittens usual- ly have the sharpest claws, and nobody enters a pageant to be a runner-up. But, that drama and dedication is what feeds competition. Meanwhile at the hotel, the early birds that drove, lazed around the pool discussing strategies, but never revealing what their last and biggest show would be. The trust factor is very low in the competitive racks of stardom. It seems that one never boast's about an up coming performance. Not only is it bad luck, but also it is also like tipping your hand at poker... you must never give an opponent the edge, or you're fucked. Night one produced a standing room only audience down at the Gallery, with a line of patrons milling about out the door. They knew why they were here. It was going to be a melee of mammaries and a barrage of buxom booty, and probably the biggest pageant of feature enter- tainers ever to hit town. Backstage, contestants ran amok getting ready for their shows. At least a dozen flavors of perfume clouded the air in the performer dressing room. Props were inspected, music was selected and high-fives were eagerly accepted. On stage, the competition heated up, with shows gaining more momentum throughout the entire week. As I fought my way back to the land of the living ringside, the first contestant hit the stage to roaring applause. And as they say: 'The crowd wont wild." Show after stun- ning show perplexed the room, with all eyes front and center stage. Many astounding sets were witnessed at the USA's. But alas, it was time to drop the Chalupa's, and pick a wiener! Miss Nude USA's host with the most, "Icepick Benny" jumped aboard the Gallery main stage and began to read off the list of winners. FALA is a national barassocia- tion with approximately 200 members who are lawyers from across the country and Canada that predominately practice in the area of First Amendment and adult entertainment law. For the last fifty years almost every case dealing with adult entertainment issues that has been argued before the Supreme Court of the United States has had a member of the First Amendment Lawyers Association arguing for the side fighting for freedom of expression. FALA holds two meetings per year where lecturers share with the membership the cutting edge of representing adult entertain- ment clients. In the past year, Benjamin has hosted two meetings. The first in February 2005 was in San Jose, Costa Rica and the second was held in Santa Fe, New Mexico in August of 2005. It has been an absolute pleasure to work with some of the finest lawyers in the country and an honor to lead such a group of dedi- cated individuals loyal to First Amendment freedoms. At the meeting that just passed, the topics ranged from defending an obscenity case to handling allegations of money laundering and asset forfeiture. One of our members, Robert Corn- Revere of the Washington, D.C. firm of Davis, Wright, Tremaine, LLP told us a little bit about his former partner, John Roberts, the current nominee for the Supreme Court of the UnitedStates to replace Sandra Day O'Connor upon her retirement. Bob shared with us his opti- mism that John Roberts will make a fine Supreme Court Justice. Some of us are still very skeptical! We have had several crisis during the past year. The Federal government passed new regulations concerning the 2257 record keeping and labeling requirements for sexually explicit mater- ial. These draconian changes to the regulations are next to impossible for producers to deal with and many of our members have participated in litigation going on simultaneously in Ohio and in Denver, Colorado which led to an injunction restraining the Federal gov- ernment from enforcing these new regu- lations. Our membership has argued before these Courts that the regulations are unconstitutional and over burden some. We are confident that many of these provisions will be thrown out by the Court. The Justice Department has been threatening to prosecute mainstream pornographydealers, both on the inter- net and nationally. They have hired hundreds of prosecutors andsupport staff in order to do so. The First Amendment Lawyers Association has prepared themembers across the coun- try for any upcoming allegations of obscenity in Federal obscenityprosecu- tions and we are ready to defend the First Amendment constitutional rights of our clients against the right-wing funda- mentalist Federal government push. Jennifer Kinsley and Lou Sirkin of Ohio have successfully defended Extreme Associatesin Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Judge Lancaster found the Federal obscenity law to be uncon- stitutional as applied to internet dissem- inated material. This was a huge win that we are hoping will be followed by numerous courts across the country and lead to vast overhauls of Federal obscenity laws. The defense of the rights and consti- tutional protections of the adult enter- tainmentindustry as a whole are entrust- ed to the members of the First Amendment Lawyers Association. We all should sleep a little more soundly know- ing that such a group of qualified indi- viduals arethere to fight to ensure that we can continue to prosper in the adult entertainment business and toreceive and disseminate constitutionally protect- ed material.
