I learnt to stay r=tional even under svere emotional pressures. =span style="font-size:l6px;font-family:"times new roman";color=rgb(34,34,34);background- color:rgb(255,255,255);font-weight:400;font-style=normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical- align:baseline">M= experience of "life leadership" began in 2007, when I mov=d from my small Russian town Ulan- Ude to a big city, Saint Petersburg.=Burdened with years of provincial thinking I had to overcome and succeed b= building consensus not only of people of my own age but=of people with various languages, cultural historys and diverse goal=. If someone asked me today what the most pr=vailing problems in Russia are, I would certainly say discrimination=against minorities and the LGBT community would rank near the top.<=p> Racist and neo-Nazi violence are issues that still =C2 remain. Saint- Petersburg and Moscow are major cities where racism ha= a strong presence. For example, In 2008 when I was in my second year at c=llege, there were 53 cases of racist and xenophobic violence in which 15 p=ople were killed and 38 were injured. However, we don't often hear=in the media about these problems in Russia. After a year of living in St.=Petersburg I had witnesses injustice and unfairness towards ethnic m=norities ,so I joined Inter-Ethnic Cooperation as a volunteer to fight for the =ights that should be inherent. I could not accept, that because I was Asia=, I was not allowed to participate in specific events, enter certain publi= spaces, and being forced to fear being beaten by ultra-rightists or=other radical groups. The organization's approach was to spread to=erance and democracy among Russians by using a variety of techniques, =A0including political campaigns. Education of youth regarding the importan=e of racial tolerance was one of effective methods we used, visiting=more than fifty public and private schools.. Our efforts to reach politica= authorities were worthless, they remained uninterested in such crimes. As=for today there are some significant improvements in legal prosecutions of=crimes of a racial basis which makes me believe that my active participati=n in these political campaigns were not useless. =s a part of LGBT community, I also had to face injustice and hatred agains= gays and lesbians. The hardest part of this experience was to accept =C2 myself as who I am and continue to live with it. Because of =A0the religion and high conservatism in my family, I never spoke about =t with my family, friends or classmates. Being the oldest child in the fam=ly of four, I always set an example for my younger siblings. I graduated h=gh school with honors, I was accepted to EFTA_R1_00103642 EFTA01783198 the most prestigious colleg= in Saint Petersburg receiving a full merit scholarship. I was afraid to s=atter the image of myself that I had so carefully crafted. Since there were not many places or websites were LGBT community c=uld interact and meet others, my wife and myself, decided to create a some=hat secret society using the Internet. Currently, we are developing =ur own website for LGBT people around the world, especially for those who =iving in isolated areas such as former Soviet Union's. Our mission wit= this website is to create an interactive social platform where gays, lesb=ans and transgender can communicate freely with each other and make friend=. The name of the website is Unq.one as it perfectly defines who we are. H=wever, the challenging part of this project was to advertise our sit= to Russian-speaking users letting them know that we exist. Any attempts t= use the internet to expand politically unpopular views are usually =C2 suppressed by the authorities The Internet domains in countries=of former Soviet Union are tracked and can be shut off even to a slight hi=t on LGBT. Thus, we also created a specially customized application for iP=one and android that can't be be as easily blocked as IP. =AO Although the entire investment into this project came from our ow= budget, the website will be completely free for our users. We believe tha= someday our social network will expand and become successful and that the=e will be people who will want to support our project. While my primary goal is a career in environmental sustainability and=its areas of influence. I feel that as the world is joined more closely on=the internet, the differences are more accentuated rather than diminished.=Having served in senior positions in both Harvard and the United Nations d=aling with water scarcitywa a major accomplishment , I spoke with the high=st ranking diplomats about water issues in the same hushed tones as =ere once reserved for racial and sexual differences that underlie most of =y life While my life were taking me from one plac= to another, I learned to understand the world and myself in a completely =ifferent way.
