I have sent you a few things on Mara as a big company - they want to expand into health and me to run. Spoke a lot to Boris about it - want BG to be a part of it (Boris' PE fund) in some small way. Portfolio of projects, a few groups looking to invest - Ashish thinks it would be about a billion $. Boris supportive and says he would help in terms of sourcing. intel and also investment. I feel like I can't be in the health space in Africa without Bill. That would send a terrible message. Bill always asks me if I need anything and I always respond "not yet." I've not asked for anything since I wanted for it to be exactly right. Don't need a lot, mostly it's a messaging/optics things. I did introduce him to Ashish in Davos and he loved him. For Mara (not yet Mara health, that would be me) Very neat partnerships on the table and markets I understand (like health), especially the urban ones in Africa. One partnership is w GE to build diagnostic centers in big African cities. Another is with some of the big pharma/diagnostics to do licensing business - jointly. Another is to build vaccine and biotech manufacturing capacity in South Africa and Senegal. Stuff like that. Ashish is a fellow YGL and extremely honest, hard working and high integrity. Dubai based but Mara health would need a USA presence. Can be anywhere I want to build it. They are flying out their team to meet me Thursday. It is a very small team so that's nice. It would be nice to make a transition into the world of "profit" and to be in charge of something - with a terrific and experienced backstop. The latest they want me to start would be February 2014 (after Davos where they want to make a splash). I also need to deliver on a few things here at the WB. I already did one thing which is good. plus the folks at the IFC are being nice and offering for me to come sit with them and learn about the health sector lending - and also would be nice to know their team anyway. Also, the OPIC folks keep asking when I will have some deals for them. My fellow YGLs at the economist and other media sources willing to help hype when I need it. Legit media, not fake stuff.
