Dear Mr. Epstein:
Reason for contact. I learned about your work in the scientific community when a former
colleague at the University of Maryland, College Park told me that you had contacted him some
time ago.
As you probably know, you and I followed one another on Twitter recently. I would like to tell you
more about my nascent science crowdfunding business, more than you can read on my website,
and explore ways to collaborate.
Crowdfunding Emphasis. ScienceBucks focuses on the frontiers of science. I am emphasizing
research that will interest millions of people. I see that as the only way I can attract a big enough

audience to raise the amounts of money scientists require.
The Name. ScienceBucks started out as a code name but has stuck. I wanted to be clear that
our business is about the finance of science seasoned with the right amount of irreverence,
controversy, wonder and amazement.
Status. Two weeks ago, I formally invited the scientists whose work I would like to include in my
first crowdfunding attempts. Almost all have indicated a desire to go to the next step. I'm still
waiting for a couple of decisions. I am casting a wide net that includes astronomy, physics, life
sciences, medicine, and social science.
More specifically, the projects include: new ways to observe the youngest galaxies, non-dark-
matter explanations for the anomalous spinning of galaxies, geometric attempts to unify gravity
and the other forces of nature, quantum information and teleportation. an MRI probe to watch
medicines and metabolic processes in the body, a biochemical chain reaction with the sensitivity
to detect single protein molecules, the role of quantum mechanics in biological ion channel
selectivity, the prediction of water-born epidemics using satellite observations, the role of
quantum mechanics in the sense of smell, the molecular basis for animals' propensity to explore
the unknown to the exclusion of fundamental needs, and the sociological origins of war.
These topics all represent bona fide ongoing discussions.
Other Aspects of My Business. Since I am a physicist, I am also interested in catalyzing
research that I feel needs to be done and then getting it financed. For example. I think that the
arcane field of thermodynamics is still going to offer up fundamental new physics. Ask yourself
how a mammalian biological cell transfers heat to blood. We know the processes in general, i.e.
conduction, radiation and convection but we don't know the detailed mechanisms. These are
certain to offer up new quantum phenomena but very few people anywhere in the world are
focused on this (more in our next letter). Not only is this interesting from a frontier science
perspective but also from a medical perspective because one of the main symptoms of disease
is a change or loss of control of physiological heat management (i.e. fever).
Next Steps. I look forward to hearing from you.
Regards.
Jeff Lapides
