They were at max weight with 4 people, if not overloaded, and an aft cg will make the rudder much less effective and harder to maintain control if you lose an engine. But still they must have been really slow to begin with because that plane, on a standard day, will not lose directional control until you get so slow that you stall. (Vmc is lower than stall speed) I am very curious to find out what happened.
