I started looking at the 2010 academic job market (ads are already out there a year in advance!) and indeed, once again there no AI jobs but many bioinformatics jobs. I will apply for them this fall ... so, if some visionary doesn't fund an AGI project or Novamente's virtual pet business doesn't take off, in Fall 2010 I'll get paid to be a "narrow AI / bioinformatics prof" and do my AGI work on the side. Or else I'll move to China where there is AGI funding. But either way, some research support for the next year (or at least the fall) would be very helpful and would give me time to write up all the "math of AI" stuff I've been doing, giving my AI architecture a more rigorous grounding. (The math in itself doesn't help build the AGI, but it does help suggest ways to streamline the software design, thus making the engineering job easier -- though not easy enough.)
