As for Guatemala: =C2 Even though one arrives at the airport near Guatemala City, that'= not an attractive place. We recommend going directly from the airport to =ntigua. All told, this is one of the most culturally interesting places in=the world and only a 5 hour flight from JFK. For things to do: 1. V=sit Tikal, the most impressive Mayan city ever discovered (a one hour flig=t by small plane from GC airport, stay at La Lancha). 2. Antigua de Gua=emala, a Spanish colonial city that was larger than any city in North Amer=ca when it was abandoned in 1777 due to a threatened volcanic eruption tha= never occurred (stay at Pensativa House Hotel.) 3. Chichicastenango, a=wonderful Indian market town (not to be missed on a market day - absolutel= amazing on a religious holiday such as Easter. Stay at the Mayan Inn. See=the churches and shop bargains!) 4. Lake Atitlan, a 1,600 ft. deep lake=in the mouth of an extinct volcano with Indian villages, accessible only b= boat, around it. (Stay at Hotel Casa Palopo.)
