Jeffrey,
During the Korean War, I served in uniform in the
all-black 503rd Field Artillery Battalion. I earned
my Purple Heart and Bronze Star in what was
then a still-segregated army.
I was following a path blazed just a few years
before by heroes like the Buffalo Soldiers of the
92nd Infantry of World War II. They went off to
war in the name of the "Double V"--victory over
fascism abroad and prejudice at home. In Italy,
they faced some of the toughest battles of the war. When they got home, those soldiers
became leaders in the Civil Rights Movement.
