Re: Bentley iPOD
Date: 07-19-06
I had a conference call yesterday with Michael Angelo of Ultra Smith, Forrest Kennedy
the St. Louis installer and David Lampert to discuss your request of installing the iPod
docking station in the center console per your drawing.
The results of this call are the following:
1) It is Michael Angelo and Forest Kennedy's opinion that there is no acceptable,
professional, direct iPod remote control available except for the Kensington unit
installed in the plane, as you know it must view all available information on the
ipod screen. From your diagram the distance would be too far for viewing. Also
there is the possibility the iPod could fall out of the Kensington docking station
while the car is moving.
2) Using the existing Alpine stereo will allow for 2 scenarios with the iPod
a. scenario A allows you to remotely control the iPod with the Alpine
remote, however, the iPod details would be displayed on the radio —in the
front of the car, far away, and very difficult to see
b. scenario B, directing the details of the iPod to the iPod screen, eliminates
the use of the Alpine remote. To control the iPod in this scenario would
require you to use the iPod controls. If the iPod is mounted in the center
console you would need to reach forward to press the buttons. If the iPod
is mounted sideways in the tambered door, you would be able to see the
display and access the iPod buttons more easily. Also spoke with Nick
Lambros and he suggests implementing scenario B.
Another idea was to remount the radio in the rear of the car —this is doable, but we must
identify an adequate location to install it. This would allow for you to use a remote that
would control the iPod, but the menu items and status items of the iPod would be on the
radio's display.
Please advise on how we should proceed
Thank you,
