Privately owned and managed, these properties embody the European and African partnership whose commitment to conservation will inspire you. You will be treated as a family friend rather than a tourist. The Uncharted Way Uncharted Outposts offers an insight into Africa very few get to experience. This behind the scenes, one-of-a-kind experience allows for a more in-depth, personalized safari. We believe the classic African safari is not just about the Big Five. It is as much about breathtaking landscapes, the diverse and vibrant cultures and most importantly, we believe it is about the people that make a difference on our trips. Our hosts and guides share their lives and their countries with you; their commitment to wildlife conservation is unquestionable, and this is what sets us apart. We provide our guests with the unique opportunity to share and experience the true lifestyle of the classic African safari, while staying at private wildlife ranches, Bush Homes"', small stylish lodges and traditional tented camps. Days are filled with adventure; nights unashamedly spent in luxury. This is Africa—the Uncharted Way! An Original Concept In 1993, we created the Bush Homes of Fast Africa, as an association of private ranches, small intimate lodges, luxury tented camp, bush camps, coastal retreats and small up-country estates in the heart of Kenya and Tanzania. These "Bush Homes" have been in existence since European settlers came and lived off the land in the 19th century, when Africa was still considered a remote frontier where only the brave and rich ventured. Today, a few of these families whose ancestors settled this beautiful, fertile land still live on these spectacular properties. They have opened their doors to outsiders offering us the chance to experience true safari life as it was in decades past. Bush Homes of Kenya Uncharted Outposts, Inc. founded the Bush Homes concept back in 1993. The Bush Homes properties are located on private land and on conservation areas near or adjacent to the famous national parks and game reserves. Nearly seventy percent of Kenya wildlife reside outside the parks. We see the same animal populations, and like the wildlife, are free to roam between private lands and national parks as we choose. Kenya is a land of contrasts, comprising of arid deserts, rich savannah's, snow capped mountains, large lakes and dense forests. The wildlife areas are as diverse as the country! Kenya is wild and wonderful and your stay at the Bush Homes property assures you will not see herds of tourists. The landscape is diverse, with each camp fitting into its surrounding area unobtrusively and taking on its region's local character. Accommodations range from stunning wildlife ranches to luxury tented camps, private estates, homesteads and traditional tented camps. All of the Bush Homes properties are small, intimate and exclusive by nature, with capacity from 7 to 10 rooms. The lodge was built is 1992 by local artisans using indigenous building materials and dead wood found on the property. The result is a supremely comfortable and luxurious lodge, totally in keeping with its surroundings as if grown organically from the rocks on which it was built. B orana Lodge is very private, so you will not be overwhelmed by crowds or game park rules. We have a fleet of custom-built four wheel drive vehicles, so our extraordinary driver/guides will get you up close and personal for a very intimate view of wildlife. One of the best ways to see wildlife is on a guided bush walk. Again the guides are superb and have extensive knowledge of the Bush and its ways which adds a rich dimension to each hike. If like some serious exercise, take one of our mountain bikes for a spin. We guarantee a lot of stunning scenery, herds of plains game and a few sections of sharp descent making this an adventure to remember. In a valley which meanders out of the Laikipia Plateau onto the Samburu plains of Northern Kenya, there is a retreat available only to the very few. This remote paradise is surrounded by a private ranch, which has been devoted to the conservation of its wildlife and its natural habitat. p rivacy is paramount at Borana Lodge. Each cottage is tucked into the landscape to capture it's own special view, totally secluded from its neighbor. As a result, guests have a chance to experience both the wildness and solitude of Africa. Comforts abound, including a central eating and sitting area with inviting leather sofas surrounding a huge fireplace with picture windows looking onto the valley below. Wonderful meals are served at a massive rosewood table in the dining room. There are fresh vegetables and produce from the farm, freshly squeezed juices from our orchard and fine wines from around the world. The 5,000-acre ranch and game sanctuary, lies along the Uaso Nyiro River along the edge of Kenya's North East Province. It overlooks the Mukogodo, home of the nomadic Ndorobo people, with views that unveil the very face of Africa. D ays at O1 Malo are as full or unruffled as guests prefer. Colin and Rocky spent 21 years of their married life on O1 Ari Nyiro Ranch, owned by Kuki Gallmann, author of "I Dreamed Of Africa?' Colin developed the property into a prime cattle and sheep ranch, as well as a wonderful sanctuary for wild animals including the endangered black rhino, which numbers nearly 50 animals. The twist here is that while the local Samburu community owns the land, the camp itself was built and run by a local Samburu guide - Loyapan Lemarti - and his Kenyan-based fashion designer wife, Anna Trzebinski. This unlikely duo met on safari - he was her guide - and were later married. Their dream camp emerged, nestled in an oasis in a spectacular setting beneath a grove of palms and centenary fig trees. Anna and Lemarti own two other camps, a Nomadic Camp that is pitched seasonally and a romantic Stargazing Camp by a river at is truly unique about staying at Lemarti's Camp is experiencing the "Rites of Passage" safari that Lemarti has crafted. It is an experience unparalleled in East Africa today. No safari vehicles or armed guards here. Guests quite literally walk into the wilderness with Samburu warriors armed only with their traditional weapons, their sharp senses and generations of knowledge. These gentle tribesmen will talk with you about their ways, connect you with amazing wildlife and take you into a moment in time that is both authentic and other worldly. A nna designed every inch of this gorgeous property both inside and out. It's in her genes - her mom is an interior designer and her dad is an architect. The camp is open and alluring; both visually and physically connected to the incredible magic of the African bush. All of the rich and colorful furnishings were designed by Anna and handmade by local artisans. There are no set itineraries here. Guests can stay in bed until noon or leave before daybreak to take in the spectacular ornithological paradise. Guests are encouraged to interact with the land and the amazing Samburu people who call it home. 1.888.995.0909 I EFTA00602035 UNCHARTED OUTPOSTS I AFRICA COTTARS 1920'S CAMP COTTARS CONCESSION, MARA AREA I KENYA The Cottars Safari tradition began in 1919 and for more than 80 years they have been providing an unparalleled safari experience to discerning clients. Thislegendary camp is ensconced in 250,000 acres held by a community of 3,000 Maasai in the remote area of the Olentoroto Hills, just outside the boundary of the Mara Game Reserve. This area is pristine, untouched by any kind of tourism or development and offers exquisite privacy. You will feel as if you have been transported back in time, especially when you are served afternoon tea from silver poured into china by a waiter kitted out in a crimson fez and vest over a full length Swahili tunic. NAIROBI I KENYA Your host, Paul Verleysen, moved to Africa from Belgium in 1970. He has worked in the Congo, Rwanda, the Ivory Coast and finally Kenya where he bought a hunter's home and transformed it into Ngong House - a private, serene and luxurious retreat situated in the Karen / Langata area of Nairobi. The lodge overlooks the Ngong Hills, only a few minutes away from what used to be Karen Blixen's vast coffee farm. "I had a farm in Africa, at the foot of the Ngong Hills," she wrote. Ngong House is beguiling and tranquil. Five rustic tree houses nestle almost invisibly into a landscape of thorn trees, cactus and acacia offering delicious privacy, pampered service, and gorgeous views of the undulating Ngong Hills. G uests can enjoy sundowners by the fire, candlelit meals in the voluptuous dining room, and private drivers/guides for excursions to Nairobi's museums, markets and wildlife sanctuaries. Or you can choose to relax and dine on your lovely verandah watching breathtaking sunsets over the Ngong Hills and flocks of birds that descend on the bird feeder hanging just in front of your tree house. B uilt entirely from wood with traditional African grass roofs, the tree houses are on stilts with two levels; a bedroom area upstairs- replete with a four poster - and a living area on the lower floor. Each house is raised 15 feet from the ground so guests will have an uninterrupted view of the Ngong Hills over unspoiled bush. They are designed with elegant comfort in mind yet the interiors have a decidedly rustic feel. Regional artists have added many of the finishing touches, such as hand woven rugs, bed covers, lamps and beautiful stained glass. I 1.888.995.0909 I EFTA00602038 KENYA The great safari land of Kenya is without doubt the stuff of legend, not just for their mighty tribes and proud warriors, or the intrepid explorers and fearless pioneers of days gone by, but also the magnificence of their landscape and wildlife. K enya is located on the East Coast of Africa, astride the equator. It is truly a land of contrasts; comprising arid desert, rich savanna land, mountains, large lakes and dense forests. The coastal area along the shores of the Indian Ocean has tranquil beaches, turquoise waters and a wealth of history established by early Arab and Portuguese traders. PEOPLE There are more than 40 tribes in Kenya, the most distinct being the Masai and Samburu. These tribes are still found in rural ar- eas, dressed in their traditional style, living a relatively nomadic life, tending herds of cattle. It is interesting to note that these people have been integrated into a developing industrial nation without having to relinquish tribal customs and values. WEATHER Because Kenya is located on the equator, there are no extremes in the seasonal temperatures and there is little humidity. The elevation of Nairobi is 5,500 feet with the most of your safari conducted at elevations of 4,500 feet or higher. The nights are cool, averaging 50 to 60°F, with highs ranging from 70 to 90°F. The rainy season is from April to May, with some short rains in November. The coolest months are July-August, and the warmest months are late December to mid-March. The coast is warm and often humid, with a steady breeze. REASONS FOR PURCHASING TRAVEL INSURANCE The terrorism attacks on September 11th, 2001, signaled a redefining moment for U.S. travelers. In response to the unprecedented logistical and psychological impact of these and recent events, travel insurers have revised their policies concerning travel. Unlike most elements of vacation planning travel insurance isn't alluring, exciting or even remotely interesting. which might be why so many travelers don't even consider it when planning their trips. When it comes to protecting your vacation investment and. sometimes. even your well-being, nothing is more important than travel insurance. Traveling to Africa is expensive and it is an 'investment' that should be protected for the following reasons: To protect your family To protect your health and belongings. To have assistance anytime and anywhere. To achieve greater peace of mind. Trip Cancellation: Perhaps the most important coverage of all. trip-cancellation insurance will reimburse the cost of your trip if you're forced to cancel your plans for any of a number of covered reasons. These include your falling ill. death or illness of a family member. Trip Interruption: By purchasing trip interruption insurance. you will be protected from unexpected events that results in delays or premature end to your vacation. Medical Insurance: Having comprehensive medical coverage at home does not mean you will always be protected abroad. Travel-insurance packages typically come with medical coverage and include the cost of air evacuation when deemed necessary by the insurer. The medical coverage of travel insurance policies is supplemental. meaning it reimburses you for whatever amount your primary health insurance doesn't cover. An excellent supplement to travel medical insurance is the services offered by Medjet Assist. an air-ambulance company that flies members to whatever medical facility they choose if they are hospitalized on a trip abroad and require further hospitalization. War & Terrorist Threat: War or the 'threat' of a terrorist act is not covered. for example: 1) If you decide to cancel your plans because of a -threat' at your specific destination, you will not be covered. 2) if a terrorist incident/violence occurs within 30 days of your scheduled arrival, then you are covered. Weather. You are protected if you are forced to cancel due to inclement weather that causes an airline to ceased operations. Note: In order to recover any money from a vacation canceled for weather-related reasons. the insurance policy must have been purchased before the storm appeared on the weather map. We REQUIRE all persons traveling with Uncharted Outposts to purchase travelers insurance for your protection! EFTA00602041
