From: John Steele To: "Jeffrey E." <[email protected]> Subject: Re: Date: Sun, 09 Jul 2017 11:30:37 +0000 Jeffrey, Wide open on Wednesday and Thursday...will call your assistant to book. Attached is our About Nautilus package that provides more information on the magazine, audience and staff. Not sure if Lany mentioned it, but we've been in talks with Rush Holt for over 6 month about merging Nautilus into AAAS, as a companion for Science. A merger that would be financially backed by a HHMI and the Simons Foundation funding pool, until we go profitable within the next two years. The long process has put us in a very challenged financial position, since normally the grants from HHMI and Simons that we were expecting at the end of 2016 are now tied to backing a potential merger. A backing, I might add that HHMI is institutionally agnostic about. Its not specifically tied to AAAS. Both Simons and HHMI are big supporters of the work we do at Nautilus and just want to put Nautilus into a stable place. I've been talking to Larry because we are looking for an alternative to AAAS that will keep Nautilus independent. There is some degree of trepidation, even on HHMI's part, about the effect of AAAS's association culture on Nautilus' unique style. But we can go over all of this when we get together. I had talked to Larry about three potential structures for an independent Nautilus; keep it a 501(c)(3), create a for-profit subsidiary within the foundation that would contain Nautilus, or transfer Nautilus to a for-profit newco. The for-profit subsidiary has potential benefits as it can still be used to bring in foundation funding to the effort....particularly through our education program. I'm relaying this long story because as part of HHMI and Simon's efforts to build a funding pool for Nautilus, they commissioned Ed Fones, a publishing consultant to provide an independent business plan and opportunity report on Nautilus. I wanted to discreetly share those with you. Looking forward to talking.
