He does not know I applied for the big job - since I had already done
that a few weeks before.
I mentioned to you fin NYC) that durino the strateov review meeting he told us all that he liked the urban work — he said "why
don't we send
ow to do urban and keep it alive until we eradicate polio and have
more money".
from. then melinda said "yeah and while melanie is there she can
help them straighten out the data on delivery".

As we discussed I am pursuing the big job first since it isn't a secondement and it is a "line" job vs. a "staff' job that I would get
with a secondement. When we talked about it, we agreed I should pursue the two in parallel.
at least that is what he told me when I saw him a few weeks back. He
if I promised to come back.
And Melinda sent me a super nice and very personal note too.

here is the note I mentioned:
I was just in Washington DC seeing the President and a lot of the Executive team (Lew, Sperling, Donilon,
Holdren) as well as a bunch of Senators.
A number of people mentioned how they thought Jim Kim would help the World Bank do a better job.
I told the Foundation team that the next time I am in DC I should get together with a number of World Bank
people including Jim to discuss one or more issues.
It could be primary health care or agriculture or slums or some mix of those. I hope I am not being naive that
World Bank can be a stronger player in the development game
I will be sorry not to have you full time at the Foundation since your broad thinking let you pioneer new areas
and make valuable suggestions.
However the World Bank connection is an important one where you could really help them and help the
Foundation connect with them.
So I feel great about your work for the Foundation even though the urban work isn't being pursued as a
priority right now.
It is important enough we will get back to it when we have made progress on other things I hope. Ideally
World Bank or others would advance the field during those years.

Either in Seattle or DC I will find a chance to thank you in person and make sure we keep the connection
going.
Steve did amazing work for Microsoft. He is a brilliant software leader. I feel like it is a bit tragic for Microsoft
that Ballmer and Sinofsky didn't add up well but I am not blaming anyone. Steve stayed to do critical critical
work that give the company a chance for a strong renewal. He showed a lot of patience and unbelievably
dedicated work in all his work but particularly his work on Windows. I am very hopeful that he and I get to
work together on projects in the future — whether it is technology business or development related. I would
also like to touch base with Steve face to face sometime in the weeks ahead. My family is headed out to live
in Africa for 3 weeks on December 6 so it might be when I get back in early January. I hope he knows he has
all my respect. I wanted to help with the incompatibility between him and Ballmer but I did not find a way to
do so.
